Sorry for multiple posts but I vaguely remember someone telling me vegetable oil was ok for oiling leather. Is that true?

I don't have any neatsfoot and I doubt the feed shop is open tomorrow and I am really impatient to oil my new bridle. I have some kao kaolin (sp?) but I'm not sure that is for new tack? More for all my old neglected covered in mould tack. tehe.

You really shouldn't be putting oil on leather. I got this from a saddler: Cow skin contains fat (grease), not oil and especially not vegetable oil and in order to replenish the fat and keep your leather in good condition use grease such as currier grease (like J&E Sedgewick) or Kocheline.

kocheline will be fine. hammanol would be nicer. veg oil will do. please dont oil or soap it unless you know it fits as if you do you wont be able to take it back and swap it!! if it was a crimbo present!

It fits :) It's already been on him. Hence me deciding it needs oiling. He looked mightily cross as he had a pile of haylage he was trying to eat whilst I was fiddling!

honestly. Why is it called that? I'd love to know where the name comes from. It's impossible to say and spell, hardly ideal by todays standards surely?
