I am a firm believer of not knocking something until I have tried it, and I have had my 1st encounter of Natural Horsemanship this afternoon, and whilst I'm not going to knock it its not for me.

I had some issues on lunging and this lady was recommended to me, alot of what see did made total sense, well more the practical side really, it really went pear shape when the mumbo jumbo talk came .If only she hadn't started talking about his left and right brain speaking and how she felt him tense when she wrapped the lunge whip around his neck.
I think the final straw came for me when whilst she led him into the stable he slightly rushed in, hasn't done this before and certainly isn't an issue for me, but she felt he had issues with claustophobia(sp), no I thought he was probably in ahurry to get away from you!.

Now I know some people think its great, and as I said earlier some of what she was doing was common sense and worked, but then IMO she went OTT with the blurb.

So I'm a fair few quid poorer, ribbed by the farrier who watched I'm now taking comfort in a choccie biscuit a cup of tea and my holiday diet goes out the window again.

TarrSteps the answer to your question is yes and no, yes she got him going out on the circle better and to stop there, but I feel we could have accomplished far more without the talk.

She had him in one of those natural horsemanship halters and did say that I wouldn't get the results without using one of them, I haven't got one so we will see how I get on next time.

Apalacia01- yes felt a total plonker really especially when she went on about eye contact and body posture and then proceeded to march up to my face about 3 inches away and then prod me in the shoulder with the lunge line, then said could I tell from her stance that she meant business.Gulp yep!

Well I have tried it with excellent results. I think, like dealers, riders, instructors etc. some are better than others. I wanted mine to help me with little cobs rather pushy bargy manner. She did and not only did she do it she has enabled ME to do it. He has very good manners now.No talk of right or left brain or attempts to sell me any type of halter either. She did teach me body language which works and I use it in the field too with the other horses. Sometimes they would walk towards me and I would get out of their way. NO LONGER. I send THEM out of my way and act like an alpha horse. Its quite amusing really.

Yes I think in situations like yours pirani it works wonders, she was very gentle but made it clear what she wanted to do.
This I find ok, it was the waffle that went with it all that for me ruined it.
My trainer had a barging issue with her dressage horse and this was put right via this lady. So as you say different courses for different horses- or something like that!

That's not natural horsemanship, that's Parelli! I have used natural horsemanship on horses that don't lunge with great results! But these were Monty Roberts training methods, no right brain left brain mince. Just a horse and a school and a bit of trial and error
