some of you may remember thay my 7year old (now 8) had suspected cushings disease. he had all the tests done which gave back a result of most likely cushing disease but not a 100% diagnosis. anyway he was put on perigloid any last month i again was not convinced he was right so got vet back out and she took more bloods. the bloods indicated a marked improvement since being on the treatment but im still not happy.

he is a mess to look at he has a hairy face but no summer coat ( he has been getting clipped out due to his big hairy coat but his caot on hos body just won't grow know).
he has got laminitis rings on his feet even although on a bare paddock a couple hours a day and in the rest of the time so getting no grass. he keeps rubbing his head and i am know wondering if he is in any pain.

it was nice weather so took his lightweight rug of so the sun could get on his back and it turned nasty while i was at work. when i got home he was in the feild shelter soaked right through as if he was not waterproof(you could splash his back and all his muscles she all going and he was shivering) i know it was wet but it was not cold.

i just am at a loss what to do for the best any more as i don't want him to suffer but don't know what is wrong with him anymore.

any sujestions or help

p.s original post to let you get the just of things. thanks for rteading and any help andrea xx

Give the pergolide more of a chance - if it has already had some good effects, less drinking and improvement on the bloods (I'm guessing his blood glucose is closer to normal now?) give it a bit longer.

It always takes time for anything involving hair to improve, as it is so slow growing. It might be a case of managing his baldness with rugs in the short term, and be warned the summer coat may not come normally this summer because of the time you have started treatment.

I would always trial a pony on at least a month to 6 weeks of pergolide before making any decision on whether it is working or not. The tests for cushings are also notoriously unreliable/difficult to interpret - I am treating a pony that was also borderline cushings on test, but is responding very well to pergolide so we are keeping treating based on clinical response.

As long as he is happy in himself and you can manage things with rugs etc keep persevering. Hopefully the pergolide will also reduce his susceptibility to laminitis.

thank you and i am not ready to make any drastic dessions yet and going to chat to vet tommorrow. forgot to mention he has been on the pergolide now since the end of december at a dose of 1mg daily so has been in his syatem for quite some time. it looks like he will be in his lightweight all summer but that is not a problem either just don't want him to be in any pain or suffering
