Well I am currently sat behind a bush hiding from my a$$hole of a pony who is refusing to be caught but calling to come in. Every time I get near to put his head colar on he legs it off I have been trying for an hour but having no luck and now it's getting dark. I would leave him out but yo wouldn't allow it so I'm stuck.:mad::mad::(:(:(

hmmmmm - emergency measures needed.......bucket of food to stick his head into while leading him in ?

I must admit if it was my boy, he'd stay out if he tried that. He refused to come across the field for his dinner one night, so he went without  , must admit he hasn't done that since !

Good luck sm x

Unfortunately I don't have any feed cos he doesnt get fed :( thanks any way tho hmm still sat hiding from him it's getting a bit chilly now

You could try the send him away trick! Every time you go to catch him shoo him away and keep on doing it, then turn your back on him and walk away.

It takes a lot of patience but it does work. Eventually he will want to be with you. :)

ETA Just realised it is tonight you need it! May be worth trying it though when you have time.

Go and ask someone if you can have a few pony nuts to rattle in a bucket. Once his head is down just slip a rope around his neck and don't bother trying to get the headcollar on til you know you have got him.

In future leave a headcollar (fieldsafe) on him with a short rope attached so that you can just grab it (by short rope I mean about 6-8inches).

Good luck

I would tell the YO what's happened and just leave him out. Not much to be done in the dark.........and then follow advice above till he learns his manners.

If you don't have any feed, what about apples, carrots, or anything else he likes?
Has he been fed out of a bucket before, so he would come to a bucked with treats?

Is there another horse at the yard he particularly likes, and you could ask the owner to lead over to the gate so yours would come over for you to catch?

Tranquiliser dart?! :o

I sympathise. We used to have a pony at the yard who was foul to catch, you'd set out hours before the lesson he was needed for and you'd still be ther 10 mins before he's meant to be at the other end of the village, near to tears and chucking the bucket at a disappearing chestnut bottom. :o :D

2 hours later he let someone else catch him  So he has now been lunged and then followed me round loose with his nose on my back  tomorrow be will have his new field safe head collar on (only brought it yesterday and wasn't planning on usring it untill summer to keep his fly mask on). More annoyingly all the other horses were in and he still wasn't having any of it and he is normally great to catch and comes over to be got.
Thanks for keeping me amused tho guys was going to reply when help arrived.

Oh what joy! So glad you got him, before you froze to death hun.

Dizz does the 'Not today thank you!' on the odd occassion in the summer. A couple of times I've had her running round me as though on the lunge... blinking daft hoss!

Thanks mrs M it was just like that 'erm rather not' he would come up to me but as soon as I went to put the head collar on he was off. Daft yes hense the username  :D I'm hoping it just him feeling spring on the way as he has been a bit spring like lately

My horse has a tendancy to do this if my friend is getting him in for me. We have a rule now, if he doesn't let her catch him on the first attempt he gets left out on his own and i get him in when i get there. I am hoping that he will learn that not being compliant results in eveyone else being in the warm with their tea while he is hanging round the gate for an hour or more...... he's always been pretty pleased to see me when this has happened (!), although he is still being unpredictable at the moment. He does take a while to catch onto anything new though!!!

yep first his friend left so he was alone(this is normally enough to make him run over if he is being a bit funny) but he was not up for it then I did the walking away thing finished off all my jobs and left him calling the whole time then he let me get close I tried to put his head collar on and he was off again :mad: but he is having his new field safe on tomorrow

LOL.. I had this today with the SNOT of a pony we own... we leave a headcollar on, only way we can catch him.. only he stands on 3 legs and uses his hind leg to get it over his year... SO he is a SNOT!!
So no headcollar, wouldn't come in.. so i caught everything else in.. he started screaming.. so i left him half hour.. he continues screaming.. I then caught him.. took all his rugs n his hood off.. and turned him straight back out aain in cold wind for 2 hours.. he then came to call when i wanted him... ! May sound harsh but i'm not playing fiddle to an 18yr old far to wise pony!

lol jacks mum not harsh at all just you saying " now lets work togeethr here " and getting understanding and ummm better than ppl i know who when couldnt catch horse when they finally did cath it kept it in for 4 days to i quote " teach it a lesson" pmsl mmmmmmm the horse really stood there thinking "ok I will let them catch me next time" lol
