PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE report anything to your local Police, Trading Standards and BBC Watchdog. It is only by doing this can all dodgy irresponsible dealers be brought to justice. Just a few complaints to your local council Trading Standards will insue an enquiry.

Some 'dealers' profess to advertise privately, on behalf of friends or using a different names so a call to the Inland Revenue, as you bet they're not paying tax on their earnings, is also worth it. The Tax Evasion Hotline has been set up to make the most of vital information from YOU – the public and the business community. It deals with Income Tax, Corporation Tax, Capital Gains Tax, Inheritance Tax and National Insurance. Freephone 0800 788 887. This Hotline is open 8.00 am to 8.00 pm Monday to Friday, and weekends 8.00 am to 4.00pm. Details can also be found on their website http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/tax-evasion/index.htm

If you are unsure about the person you are buying your new steed from, Google their mobile number, address or name as you might just find something on the internet about them. Cached items are stored so you can still view out of date material.

There are some very nice dealers out there so don't be put off by the ones that have the horses interest at heart and not their wallet. Some offer a money back guarantee, exchange or a trial.

Good luck

Sounds like it is time we campaigned for dealers to be licensed
Having attended a conference where a couple of well known (Scottish) dealers said they would welcome this as they were totally fed up with the --set up a website, then keep changing the name crowd or here today gone tomorrow!!
The Scottish dealers selling competition horses said most of their trade came word of mouth rather than advertising.

I totally agree that there should be regulations for horse dealers. I have known some that are great and unfortunately experienced one dealer in particular that is still selling horses that are either unfit for purpose, not as described or buted up because they have a bad back and shouldn't be ridden at all.........even though she sells 'em on. This one particular person doesn't care about the horses or the people the horses hurt because the bute wears off after the sale and the horses can only tell you they're in pain by bucking, bolting or bronching. By that time she has your cash (because cheques have to go through a bank......ahem!)
