There are so many threads that pop up about how people on here are outraged at someone selling a thin horse, or a person too heavy on another horse etc etc, and the hype about 'rescuing' horses, yet there are no comments about this?! Can't understand it?!

http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/news/397/313189.html

This is a REAL needy rescue, and should have the support of every horse lover on here. It seems nobody is interested however, as hardly any comments have been made. Such a shame.:(

Aw, bless him, poor boy. I don't often go into the magazine news so hadn't seen this and I suspect I am not the only one. I really hope he has the strength and will to survive. Good on the Donkey Sanctuary and the vets who are working so hard to save him, I hope that prosecution will follow for the person that allowed him to get into this state.

Yes I hope that the RSPCA, Donkey Sanctuary, vets and court can all come to a decent conclusion for this poor little poppet!!

I had missed that story, a true needy case. Poor little scrap.

However, (with my cynical hat on here :)). I do get annoyed at the desperate plea for donations from very well off charities, yes you mustn't be complacent and donkeys live forever, but they picked up 2 donkeys near me and their lorry  it was state of the art and huge, totally over the top.

There annual income to 2010 (admittedly 15 months) was £26million. 4 people in that charity are paid over £80k a year, 2 over £90k and 1 over £100k. With on costs of pension, NI etc, benefits that is an extra 23% ish. Now people have to earn a living and all that but sheesh. It confirms that idea that the most successful charity ever would be for blind donkeys in a lifeboat.

However, they have helped that little one so hats off to them.

I did see that in the news headlines, although the article before that was the fact that there are going to be stark choices about putting healthy horses down to be made by all the major charities because there are too many to cope with. So although it is wonderful that this little one is being cared for by the Donkey sanctuary, and I'd want to do the same myself in that situation I daresay, I think that we may have to question treating such seriously ill equines at great expense when there are healthy horses being destroyed. :(

Nasty me, but how much will that cost? Wouldn't they they be able to spend the money more effectively elsewhere? * Dons tin hat*

touchstone, I had similar thoughts. I love donkeys, have had one for 26 years but it does seem a little crazy to spend so much on one when some of the well known equine charities are talking about putting healthy animals down.:(

that's what went through my mind:o As much as i applaud the work of the welfare charities i do sometimes wonder if the money is wisely spent when they plough huge amounts of resources into a single desperate case:( the cynic in me thinks it's because it's far more newsworthy and a surefire way of pulling at heartstrings to increase donations:o

Well there's nothing really to say is there RSPCA find donkey give it to donkey sanctuary who will be meeting it's costs I just hope the RSPCA prosecute the people responsible .

One of my horses went on loan to somebody who worked for the Donkey Sanctuary. Some of the tales that they told me about them were amazing. For example, they have ALL the bedding in the stables taken out and replaced EVERY SINGLE DAY!! Apparently each stable has 5 bales of shavings in it! Now I don't know if that's true but I have also seen their 3 massive brand new lorries. Are they really required? Whilst I am delighted that they help poor things like Rupert, I'd also like to see them help others equids in what is a dire time for all.

And the salaries? WOW

Well they are a very wealthy charity I have to say I have never found them lacking in any respect in helping donkeys .
When I was a welfare officer I would always call them to deal with donkey cases they are real experts lucky Rupert better times ahead for him.

Ooh don't get wrong, they do a fab job! Please don't think I am knocking them.

I just think that as they are so wealthy, perhaps the donks could have less splendidly clean bedding and shiny new lorries and perhaps might like to share the love (money!!!) with all the other needy horses? I don't think they would mind :D

They can only do that in very imited situations for instance they could fund research that benefited donkeys and therefore horses but they would be breaking the law to give money directly to horses because the money was given to the donkey sanctuary for donkey welfare and therefore that's what it has to be used for. There are very strict rules about what charities can and can't do with donated money.

Another tiresome viral marketing post about the RSPCA.
Do you happen to work for the RSPCA, Moomin1?
S :D

Nice person you are. Is that all you have to say given that a donkey has suffered so badly?!

I have no interest in you Shilasdair, as you don't me, so don't bother posting if you dislike the fact that a people are helping a donkey.

As for the entire situ, I know nothing personally about it, but having read the story, think it is sad that some people on here feel that the donkey sanctuary and RSPCA are wasting their time and money trying to make it better. :(

But surely it is common sense? If you have a seriously ill donkey that may or may not survive, if it is going to cost for example three times as much, if not more, to treat it as to take in a healthy horse; then why not give an extra three horses a chance? http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/news/397/313191.html

Well the donkey is in the care of the donkey sanctuary so no money could be spent on horses , and it's all very well to say don't waste the money on this one but let me tell you when you find them in that state and they look at you and they fight to stand for you to get into a lorry for you you won't be so keen to PTS a very sick one who is fighting reading between the lines of that newspaper report if that donkey responds well to the antibiotics I think it will make a good recovery .

I already said in my previous post that I would probably have wanted to do the same. If you read the link I posted it is the charities themselves that are saying they are going to have to put healthy horses down, there are currently 3,000 at risk. If horses can't be treated then just replace the horses with donkeys then, there are still plenty of donkeys in need of care. Actually if any animal had to fight to simply stand I would have no qualms about euthanising.
