Admit it the ONLY reason you don't spend more time up the yard is because the kettle will only boil once before it fuses everything!!!!

QR. lol at this thread really. with you Weezy, never groom for more than 15mins and that includes a good scratch with a curry etc etc. I can also get my horse groomed, tacked up and schooled for 40mins and back in the time it takes most liveries at my yard to brush off! and thats fine (as long as I'm not waiting for them!). maybe its because I worked with horses professionally.jeez, there are DIYers at my yard who take an hour over a shavings bed!

Ok so you drive past ans check he is ok a couple of times a week, 2hrs after you have driven by he does something (horses are silly) them maybe he is left there to suffer for several days, I check my horse twice a day whatever even if once (just now) I walked up to him gave him a lovely apple, checked he had four legs and was not lame, gave him a scratch and left thin to enjoy the grass!!! I rode him this morning though and gave him a nice bath to wash the sweat off!!! I love having the bond, he knows Im his mum and the one who will feed him!!!! I cant understand not having this sorry, you may as well just sponsor a horse from a resue centre!!!!!

Fool the horse is on livery - so no it wont be suffering for several days.

I agree, we all have days where we all have to do the basics and go.
I was referring to the people who never do anything but just that, like the OP.

And yes, I have known a number of people who have horses purely as status symbols, sad though it may be.

With reference to Shilasdairs comment about the "higher orders" of animals I mean it purely in a Biologist context. Meaning those animals that belong to the Order mammalia and others close to that (the marsupials). (an ability to reason is not the only criteria for measuring intelligence, other things like sensitivity, ie ability to experience grief, emotions is)

And finally whilst I do not practice Parelli, I am familiar with the principles and certainly, the guy makes some valid points, and has had huge success and a lot of people can confirm that.
Farthingwoodfox make some incredibly simplistic sweeping statements on this forum which I personally find quite offensive and inane, and I think it is appropriate to attempt to counter them.

Oh I see you're one of these who cant leave one thread to itself and move on...ok..I get that..I remember people like you from school dear!!

I love spending loads of time with my horse and she APPEARS to enjoy it. She thrives on routine and so do I. It works for us.

My horse clearly enjoys hacks and also adores lessons! She can't see the point in lungeing and to be fair it is mind numbing. If she does nothing for a couple of days she does get quite sour. She is the kind of horse who loves being groomed and fussed with, washing down after a ride is her idea of heaven. You can see it on her face. She will stand and fuss over me whilst ignoring her haynet. I trust and respect her, I hope the feeling is mutual. I have seen nothing to indicate the contrary.

However we do have people at our yard who have time to walk their dogs for an hour, but don't seem to have the time or inclination to do anything with their horses. Feet don't get picked out, rugs don't get changed, the animals are not checked for injuries. One woman just throws carrots over the gate! When these horses started getting overgrown feet, lice and laminitis it get's treated. Personally I know every lump and bump on my mare and would rather treat any problems early. I always make a point of just watching my horse for 5 mins when she comes in at night. I think you can spot things that aren't quite right early. That's just how I do it.

I am fortunate that I have the time and inclination to be able to do these things.

I suppose there is a difference between people who just like having a horse and those who have become tired of having a horse. Surely everyone has that excitement when they buy the horse, it's a shame that sometimes that enthusiasm wanes.

Bored of writing now and losing the thread!

I have two people Boarding horses with me that I don't see from one end of the month to another.

It isn't as if these are retired horses either, one is a yearling and the other a 6 year old. One owner, admittedly, lives a two hour drive away, the other two minutes away.

It seems pretty normal here, I treat the horses as my own, it is full pasture board and basically if they don't want to spend time with their horses that is up to them, it is no business of mine, as long as the rent gets paid.

Horses for courses I guess

Having two field kept ponies, in the depths of winter when its pissing down all I want to do is feed and chuck them back out, and all they want is two get back to muching hay in the shelter of their big hedge!

I know what you mean about people not spending time with their horses, but unless you know what else they've got going on in their lives at that time it's a bit unfair to judge.

I can't spend nearly as much time with mine as I used to as I have a young baby. They are on full livery, so I know their needs are catered for, and I get up when I can. What's the point in having them? I've had one of them for 13 years, the other for 4 - why should I not have them? I would never contemplate selling them because in someones opinion I didn't spend enough time with them! Circumstances change all the time and as long as they're cared for by someone on a daily basis, that's all that matters.

Perhaps people like us don't spend hours at the yard because we physically cant't stand to be in the same air space as some of the judgemental tits featured on this thread.

Think you are right there as I too have been a pro groom and you just have to get on!

QR -

My opinion is that it's no-ones business what a horse owner does with their horse, or how often they visit it, so long as the horse is being cared for by someone.

I have 20-odd livery horses here along with 20-odd of my own horses. All of the horses who board here with me, are on Full Care Board. Some owners see their horses every day and some don't see their horses for months and months. I don't care whether they come and see their horses or not, and the horses are certainly not lacking in anything

.

The horses who live here have absolutely no idea who holds their ownership papers, and I don't care whose name is on the registration papers either; the horses all know who feeds them, who grooms them, who spends time with them and once in a blue moon a stranger may come and see them. For the ones who see their owners daily, they just get extra everything!

On the days I don't ride I just muck out, give horse a scratch and a pat, feed her and go. i've got it down to a fine art and can be done it 20 - 25 mins. My horse isn't my life and if I'm honest I hate horsey chit chat too so don't hang around the yard. My YO loves me
grin.gif

Don't get me wrong I do love my horse but I have far too much going on in my life to faff around the yard. I do spend longer with her the nights I ride though. Oh and I'm on DIY.

What I don't understand is people who spend all their time with their horse and zero time on life outside the yard. OK, understatement, I do understand them, that is fine by me ... their choice. However, I do not think it necessarily makes their horses any happier or better cared for.

I do NOT like the way they judge me and others for spending less time than they do at the yard. My horse is on full livery at a professional yard, where she is well fed and cared for and given adequate turnout and equine company. I have a direct line to the owner/manager and know that he is happy with the input I make. If he was not, he would tell me, direct. In fact I sometimes get the feeling his greatest problem is the minority who haunt the yard, continually tinker with turnout, and ... worst ... indulge in back talk and constant criticism of other horse owners and their horses. This is the one thing I seriously, seriously dislike about horse ownership, and which would put me off getting another horse when mine passed away.

That happened to me! I used to arrive at stables at 7.10pm by which point everyone else had left. One weekend I saw a lady who rather accusingly said "You don't come down much do you?" to which I was able to reply "3 to 5 days midweek plus 4 times at wkends, I think that's quite a bit but it's all relative I suppose" - she was shocked as she'd never seen me midweek she assumed I didn't come down
blush.gif

I don't understand people who don't want to see their horse constantly, but equally I don't understand people who collect stamps or antiques or anything like that and they probably wouldn't understand me, so we're all different. Doesn't bother me as long as horse is ok. Their horse is probably the envy of the other horses as they are left in peace
grin.gif

That reminds me - I was encouraged, by one of the professionals based at my livery yard, to come down and see my horses more often...as unhandled youngsters would prove difficult later on.
This confused me a little, until I realised that the professional only worked 9 - 5pm, and I did my three before work - so from 6.30 - 8am in the morning, and from about 5.30 - 7pm in the evenings...

Each person is different.

Thumper is about to have a month enforced rest.

I aint gonna stand in the field with him for hours on end. It''ll be a check twice a day and that's it.....

It's bizarre how people just assume you'll be there at the same time as them, or not at all
confused.gif

Don't really see how you could manage to spend much more time with your youngsters! Can understand your confusion!

well bully for you that you have the time - thank your lucky stars...one day reality will hit hard, i am fed up of people bitching and griping about the way other people do their horses

, ATM i am soooooooooooooo fecked off words can't begin to comprehend, the horses are fed poo-picked and that's it, believe me i would love to go for a hack, but having a relative in a [****] pit hospital and having to run other people around here there and everywhere has put well paid to that...so think before you moan in future and keep your beak out of other people's business
mad.gif
as long as the horse isn't suffering and their bills are paid, i fail to see what is has to do with you?????

[/ QUOTE ]

Absolutely and totally agree with this.

I feel inclined to write as I am one of the "lazy ones". Well, I pay around 300/week in terms of livery, lessons and petrol as my horse is stabled an hour from my house at one of the best yards in the area, possibly even in the whole of England in terms of facilities.

I work 4 days a week hence my horse is groomed, lunged, turned out, put on horse walker for me but I do all the riding. Staff are on site 24/7. I think I have a very happy horse. Once he's ridden, hosed off and turned out, I really don't think he cares if I stand there and watch him or go home!

As Squatmouse said, it is the lurkers at the stables who the YO doesn't like. Its fine to watch others ride and learn, but fussing over your horse once its all settled and cared for at a professional yard can seem a bit odd. But then most of the horses up there are not seen as pets, some are headed towards the Olympics!

I know its a big investment, but I think I have learnt far more by watching the pros ride than spending all my time mucking out and feeding at the crack of dawn. I really think its down to personal preference, if you want a pet to spend time with or a horse to train, compete and learn on. Everyone's circumstances are different.

what an odd post. No offence to OP but I really can't stand people that spend their whole life 'worrying' about what other people do with their horses......drives me up the wall!

and for the record - one of my horses is very cuddly, the other one couldn't care less whether I was there or not - they're all different!

I would only ever interfere if I thought a horse was in pain.....I have a nightmare bringing my new horse back into work - wouldn't be caught and didn't want to be ridden. He's enjoying it now but took a while - think he'd have much rather been 'stuck' in a field without human interference.

I have to add another point - I've been at 3 yards and the people that spend hours fussing around their horses seem to have the 'miserable' horses.....they may like a groom or a scratch but they basically want to be left alone - and I've never met a horse that wants hours of attention....they're just long suffering!

In addition to my earlier post...

When I was younger I groomed and groomed for others on show jumping yards and at shows, I spent more time grooming than I ever did with my horses. I always dreamed of owning my own yard and having the chance to spend more time with my horses...

Years after I finally have my own yard, it has taken hard work and dedication to outright own my own yard and house with no loans at 29 yrs, so thats why I spend so much time on my yard the dream came true... and five years on I still feel the same! I dont fuss over them all the time or hang off their necks, today for example they have been fed and turned out in my back field where there is more grass, took 20 mins. Later I am going down to have a sort out in my tack room and look for some bits and bobs to sell, so I spend lots of time at the yard doing lots of different things and I always have a huge smile on my face.

Each to their own is what I say, I do not judge people so long as the horse has its needs met, who am I to judge?

But what about people like me and B and family?

Between us we have 11 horses... we only spend time with the 4 that are ridden regularly, and the 2 yearlings really, 1 of the others is out on loan.

The other 4 are checked on daily but are quite happy mooching about the field as they are!
