I have been told our bales of hay are going from £15 to £30 and he won't have enough to last the winter, I have 3 to feed day and night, they are out in small paddocks during the day but there is no grass, so go through at least 2 bales a month.
I recently found out my riding instructor (5 min walk from our yard) is prepared to let out some of her fields at £10 per week.
Now im thinking would it be cheaper (also considering he may run out of hay and i wouldn't have to pay so much for bedding) to rent a field at £10 a week (assume its per horse) and turn two out 24/7, I would still have to pay YO to keep our place at the yard and use school etc and would still have the option of bringing them into stables if needed. I would still keep one in at night on the yard as he is a wimp and older.
I don't want to annoy the YO if i was to do this, he has been quite good to us in the past.
What do you think?

U need to do what's best for you and your horses. TBH I don't see how it will affect the yard owner becasue you will still be paying livery

sorry should have explained that bit, we had too many horses on the yard due to someone buying another before selling on which still hasn't sold, was fine over the summer but didn't have enough stables.
We have all spent time thinking how to accomodate new horse and YO has just spent time splitting the big barn my mums pony is in into two stables, so this wouldn't have had to happen if we decide to turn mums mare and one of ine out 24/7 somewhere else.

Surely if the owner has been so good to you the right thing to do would just be to speak to him. Say you have been thinking about how to work things out over the winter and make sound like you are trying to do him a favour as well by helping with the hay shortage. If you are still paying the same amount of money to the YO then I can't see how he would have a problem with it. You can say you would still like access to the barn and would still like that sectioned off.

Yes you have to do the best thing about for your horses also and that is not worrying about running out of hay for them.

Mmmm I'd be suprised if your YO would be happy with the solution you're proposing.

Why not just source an alternative supply of hay????

Hi there, I might be being completely thick here but how does it save you money? Would it not work out cheaper to stay where you are and pay the extra for the hay or is it the fact that you want alternative turnout?
I think as a YO I could be upset by this but it depends on your relationship with them. They may need liveries who pay for the hay to meet their financial needs for the yard. :)

I am on a DIY yard, YO does not make or supply hay so it would not effect him financially. I would like to stay as i am though, just thinking about the hay shortage.
Aren't most if not all farmers in the same situation with hay this year or do i have this wrong? I know everyone in my area have put their hay prices up alot so i was assuming they also have limited supplies.

To me, I think it's a good idea! If you're planning to keep on paying rent at the present yard whilst the two are overwintering away, I cannot see why the present livery owner would object. In fact, if he's projecting running out of hay before winter's end then two of yours being away really isn't going to make much difference. After all, two less for him to supply hay to over winter might make his stock last a tad longer.

I'd approach him and tell him what you're considering.... you'll soon guage his reaction and know whether to proceed with the proposition.

I'm not sure. Certainly my livery yard made more or less the same amount of haylage this year as last and took the standard two cuts.

Speak to YO, as everyone above has said you are still offering to pay your rent at the yard to YO is not losing out, in fact he is benefitting as he will have a field being nearly rested for the whole winter.
All i can see is a win win situation
