This is a pretty pathetic thread really but...

I go to great lengths to avoid certain people round here, at competitions. Partly I don't like competing against people I know, partly it's just that some people just never let things go. I'm competing this weekend against the queen of "making mountains out of molehills" and I don't particularly care who does better out of the two of us (her horse is a lot older and more experienced than mine, and mine's only going out for experience) but if she "beats" me, I know it will be around the entire horsey community, and very much in the tone of "I beat X's new horse, hahaha" which is fine, I guess just a bit annoying. Wouldn't be quite so bad if I just saw her there, but I've just seen all the times now so I have two days to worry about whether my horse will do something really awful (and totally out of character) or totally embarass me (I'm not bothered about scores, I'd just rather not fall off in front of her or I'll never hear the end of it). Anyway I'm just looking for somebody to remind me that other people don't matter, I don't even know why I care? :(

Do excuse me panicking in a corner...

Ignore her. She's so lacking in self worth that she has to shout about coming ahead of people. Just try to focus and enjoy ur youngster's day. When he's older u'll beat her all round the circuit and u can just smile smugly and say well done to her when u do! Lol

Just remind yourself that you must be really good, otherwise what would be the point bragging that she beat you.

Go and have a fun couple of days, and smile in the knowledge that you must be brill :D

I'm the worst for worrying what other people may think, but...

... you need to concentrate on you, because if you're not 'on it', mistakes will happen, and if you get on thinking 'hope I don't fall off'- you probably will.

Especially if your horse is young/green you need to concentrate on giving him the most positive expereince possible- do that and you'll come away feeling like the winner.

If your horsey 'friends' don't understand that then they need to grow up.

Good luck and have fun!

Remember that she must feel you are a threat to her, and pity her really for feeling the need to belittle you, she obviously has nothing else to talk about (poor girl, lol) i have a similar situation and know how you feel but i keep reminding myself of the above!! Enjoy your horse and take pleasure in how he goes-dont waste time worrying about silly small people like her. Rise above it!! Oh, and good luck, if not this time, then next time you may well beat her and you can chuckle at her discomfort (whilst graciously saying "well done" as you carry off the higher place!! he he

first bit made me lol, and I hope the second bit is true, mostly because it would mean I haven't made a complete mess of him, as people like her seemed to think I would...

HAHA I like that idea, I shall pretend it's accurate and hold on to that thought - if I fall off, it will be even funnier and she can't laugh at me if I'm at myself can she?

You're right about everything here, and I will be trying very hard to do as you suggest! :)

Thanks very much for the replies, suddenly feeling a lot better about this...

My thoughts when showing amongst people like this?

I focus all my attention on my horse - we become one and we do it for fun.
Don't waste valuable brain matter on others - do it for you and your horse.
Nobody else matters, smile and enjoy

Often the most boring thing to these people is when thsoe they tease don't rise to the bait. Of course, there won't be any bait when you beat them ;0) Seriously though, in the competition blot everything out and be yourself. It's only when you're thinking about all the bad things that might happen when something will inevitably go wrong. (Believe me, I was doing the biggest course of my life last week and was truly nervous on horseback for the first time in years... so then came a surprise refusal and me on the floor)! Good luck, and never let anyone else spoil the fun you and your horse have together - it's way too important for that 80)
