I get really annoyed when I see overweight dogs, as there is no need for it, I have had 2 terriers in the past, both neutered and both lived a full healthy life never overweight. Now I have 3 labradors, all neutered & one of them had pups once, they are very slight in build and have never been overweight, people use the excuse, like my dog has been neutered or they are naturally like that, there is just no need of it, if you feed your dog sensibly & excercise them enough they would never be overweight, our dogs are what we make them. I have had lots of comments from other dog walkers and the vets, about how nice it is to see proper weight labs.

Couldn't agree more. I know someone who has a grossly overweight collie, it must be at least 12" across its back, no exaggeration. Every time it goes to the vets for its booster the vet tell her to get some weight off it. I saw her last week and she hasn't taken him for boosters this year because she was fed up of the vet nagging her

As above, it really is a pet hate of mine. I used to know a lady with an obese rotty, was the most sweetest dog and had perfected the art of puppy dog eyes. Poor boy eventually ended up with crippling arthritus because of the excess weight and was put down at the age of 6

I was just thinking this last week when I saw three very over weight dogs whilst driving through a small town (funny to note though that each dog was being led by an overweight person

)

I really struggle to keep Toby (my lab) at a good weight (vital for him because of his joints), I am sure that if he lived with a less active family he too would be one of those obese dogs

We would struggle with Tinadogs weight, she literally lives off fresh air! (She's a lab) whereas the Midget lab is a skinny little rake of a thing

I thing she is currently maintaining a nice weight, but over the shooting season I think we are going to have to increase her food.

I am just about to change my 3 labs food as they are looking a little too thin now, because everyone told me when they were all neutered they would pile on the pounds, plus one of the 3 has had pups, so I was paranoid about them gaining weight, I had them all on Beta Light, well they never did put on weight and they just all look a little too thin now, so am changing them to Beta Active, now that I know the neutering has not caused a weight gain. What is strange that the parents of my labs arn't the slimmest of dogs, yet mine are all extremley light weight.

B has been neutered and he is still a bit on the thin side, as always, but I would rather see a dog on the lean side than heavy, IMO it's a hell of a lot easier to get weight on than it is to get it off again.
My mother is a bugger for overfeeding dogs - it doesn't mean you are showing them more love, it means you are putting them under more physical strain, woman!!!!!!!!
She is the same with the cats - who have learned that big eyes and a pitiful meow = the fridge door gets opened.

My Spaniels and Labs are all looking ok at the mo but again will need hefty feeding soon as its the shooting season, bless them they work so hard!

I hate seeing fat dogs, really annoys me! No need for it at all. I always want to shout at the owners ... poor dogs 'killing them with kindness' as they say

My OH's mother is a bit like it with her 2 rotties ... they have access to a MASSIVE bowl of food 24/7 and its always topped up and brimming ... then she wonders why they are on the large side! Not to mention the scraps of food everyday and countless blocks of cheese all the time!!!!

I HATE it

the difference in Henry since he has lost weight is huge and it really riles me to think of how fat he was. He is so much happier, has more energy and his gait has improved no end since he became a lean mean spangle machine!

Overweight dogs and horses are my two biggest gripes, I absolutely hate to see either

Just to pick you up on that... I'm not a small person myself

but I detest overweight dogs and my 5 are all slim and fit. I take my dogs health very seriously and just wish I could take such good care of myself!!!

Oh Crikey - really sorry, definitely didn't mean to offend anyone

I really should think before I type!

Not offended as such, just trying to put paid to the myth that all overweight people are lazy and don't understand nutrition. I'm just a greedy cow

It has to be said the fattest horse I have ever seen is owned by a teeny person - I have never seen anything like it, the poor sod looks ready to explode!

However I do think a lack of understanding about nutrition generally is a huge factor, one of the dog mags a while ago did a little feature, and it said that a slice of buttered toast for a dog was the equivalent of a human eating a huge cheeseburger, or something like that anyway!

The WORST THING is when people come up to me walking my labrador, with their hugely obese labs being dragged along behind them, and tell me my dog is too skinny - even though my vet says my lab is the perfect example of weight. People are so used to seeing fat labs, but i get really offended! xxxx

What really racks me off is that my dogs and horse are both a perfect weight due to the control I have over their diets, but I am fat

Why is it so easy to sort them out when I have no willpower myself

Seriously, I detest fat dogs (you see an awful lot of fat CKCS around

) and am very proud that mine are always in excellent condition

Nothing worse than fat greyhounds

My CKCS is a little skinny mini - but you do see a lot of fatties about. He is 8, but is often mistaken for a puppy as he is so slight.

I do often see a correlation between overweight people and overweight dogs (and children) although obviously there are always exceptions. I think it is the 'food=love' mentality.

I hate it cos I got to lift them in and out of the bath tub! And then keep them propped up standing position on the grooming table cos often fat dogs can't / won't stand for long. Okay, I've been guilty of letting my mare get heavier than she should be, but not obese. A little fat isn't much better but still....

I have a conversation with several owners a day about dieting dogs. What gets ME is when they say that the vet said they were just large dogs (whatever, either the vet needs glasses and a better scale or the owner hears what he/she WANTS to hear).

Meanwhile, I joke with them that if I could have someone control my exercise and food, I'd be slim too!

Same feeling as me and OH. Lab is slim and fit, not far off lurcher speed when he runs and with visible muscles on quarters and shoulders. I am pretty well the opposite and we could both do with losing a few pounds, although OH is generally slim and lighter than me
