a horse has just turned up on our yard that kicks the stable door. the one next door used to do it and now he has started again. the other night it gave me such a headache i don't know what is worse the horse kicking the door or the owner shouting at him any ideas of how to cure it???
 
water pistol! lol
no honeslty there is a product you can buy that aquirts water up when they kick the door although ive never seen one used! othere than that how about a stall guard? and other than that how about some nurofen for the headache!!

i suggested a piece of carpet. i had a pony that did it briefly.
(i think she was copying, do you think that happens?) i put carpet on the dor she then kicked and sort of looked down at it as the noise was not the same she soon stopped. the man keeps saying i will put some rubber on the door its been 5 days now and the chemist is running out of nurofen!!!!
 
Both mine door kick at mealtimes. Ive learnt there is liitle you can do apart from ignore it or invest in a big water pistol. they do settle though and it has diminished a lot over time.

One night the YO had to go out to them all as there was so much kicking he thought there was something dreadful going on. he turned the lights on to find that someone had managed to get her stable door open and was busy eating all the breakfasts the liveries had left ready!
 
My horse does it, I put a chain across the doorway and leave the door open, once he's had his tea the door gets shut...
 
i must agree that a water pistol seems a good idea. it is harmless and i am sure the owner will stop shouting when i fire it at him. oh sorry did you mean for the horse!!!!
 
My old horse used to be stabled next door to the yard owners house, she was fuming after a week and refused to shut his door again! He had a chain up 24/7, only escaped once....
 
i will ask him to put a chain up. it makes sense. i don't want to annoy the people who own it and live next door. it does seem as they might all start to copy
 
I have posted about this before and several forum users have tried the follow trick and it really does work! Put a bucket of water (one of the soft skip/trug types is ideal) inside the stable just infront of the door. As the horse goes to kick the door, he will splash himself with water. Best of all, the horse does not associate the water with any human. It is amazing how quickly they learn not to kick the door.
 
Heres where everyone calls me cruel.....throw something at him, we used wet sponges on a pony that used to scrap the floor with his foot and now he never does it

My pony kicks the door and has done for the last 12 years, I've tried everything to stop him, including the water pistol and water bucket- he just knocked it over and kept kicking, but nothing worked. None of the other horses have ever copied him. He only does it when he wants food or attention and he knows he's in trouble when he kicks as he does it and then runs to the back of the stable!! It got to the stage where he was wearing his shoes down and was sore in the front legs so he now has a chain and a rubber mat and since he can't make any noise anymore he seems to paw the ground less!!
 
If you are going to use the water pistol make sure the horse cannot see you when you fire it. I hide round the corner of the washbox and get a direct line to the horses forehead from there.
 
mine used to do this and kept last on site girl awake all nite, before i moved him to live out, they ended up putting loads of think firm foam stuff on the inside of the door, muffled it quite well
