where's the best area of Dorset for riding/livery. Do not need extensive facilities as both horse and self getting on now. Basic, all year turn out, stable for winter, access to bridleways/off road hacking. Proper "working farm" with a few liveries ideal. Considering starting search Dorchester/Wareham areas. Also - where are the best tack shops/feed merchants/ in the county. Hope someone can help....
 
Well I only know the Bovington area, but the facilities for horse riding is fab. Not many places down there that you won't get good access to off road hacking and lots of woods and bridleways! Word of mouth was how I found the livery I was at, I think we asked people at a Purbeck riding club show.
There is a shop at Bere Regis (unsure name) can't remember if sold food but we brought bedding there. Then scat stores are the best feed places! Few other small tack shops around.
Lovely area Dorset miss it loads! Fantastic hacking.
 
I'm near Sturminster Newton, great facilities round here including my favourite tack shop (Paddock Pantry) and the hacking is superb. I'm also only a few minutes away from one of the meets for South Dorset Hunt. I have spied a great x-country course down the road from me, just trying to find out if it's private or not! I agree with MerryVB, Scats is brilliant, there's one in Dorchester and I also like Mole Valley Farmers in Yeovil. I'm a little middle of nowhere but it is central so everything in all directions is reachable without a big drive.

I know a few around here isle of Purbeck, best hacking, forest, hills and heath even beach riding (although you need a permit) PM me if you are interested and i can get you some phone numbers!
 
Thank you all so much -off to Dorchester at end of March for a reccy of the area and your input will be very useful. Perhaps I can call on you again in due course. Ta again.
