I have a 16.3 chunky horse who has Cushings. My Vet recently prescribed 1mg Pergolide. This seems a very high dose to me as my last horse who was 15hh was only on 0.25mg. Do you think this is right? The vet assured me this was the correct dosage for a horse of his size but I can't help thinking that giving him four times the dosage is wrong as he is not four times the size of 15hh.....

my 14.3 gelding has just been diagnosed with cushings and are battling lami at the mo! my vet has also prescribed pergolide and we started him on 1/2 tablet as she was worried it may make him lose his appetite, which he`d lost quite a bit anyway and we then increased it 2 a full tablet, although it depends on the size of ur horse i think it also depends on levels of insulin ect in the blood!!it`s not sumthing im familier with as im only jst having 2 deal with it! x

thanks for your reply. However, the tablets can be supplied in different dosages - so, for instances, you can get one tablet for 0.25mg or one tablet for 1mg. Saying that your giving half a tablet doesn't really help as it depends on how much it contains. I appreciate your help and thoughts though. Cheers.

Hi Joanie.

it depends on the severity of the cushings and often will be advised by the vets at liphook (who carry out the blood tests). Its quite common to start them on 1mg. Your vet should be blood testing your horse again soon, normally 4-8wks after starting the drug, to check that the pergolide is having the desired effect and the dose may then be altered depending on his response. They will also look at whether he seems well in himself. I have some patients on 0.25mg and others that will be on 2mg so dont worry it just depends on the horse and the dose he is on now is not set in stone, it may be decreased in the future if he is responding well.

Of course if you arent happy with how he is responding to the treatment you must make your vet aware straight away.

Good luck!

Our pony is about 11.3 hh and she is on 1mg a day! She has been on this for quite a while, we had a few months when she was dropped to 0.5 mg but had to increse again. We are currently awaiting blood test results to see if the current dose needs altering.

My 14.3 horse is on 1.5 mg a day and has been for about 18 months now ... prior to that he was on 1 mg for the previous 18 months .... I think my Vet said he could have as much as 4 mg .... I would hate that, but would do it if it helped Motor.

Motor is looking good 4 years on after his Cushings Induced Laminitis though
