I know this may make me seem a bit dim but just wanted to double to check i am not going to o.d my horse.
She's been put on danilon and i have been told to go by the sachets dosage...but i think it might be quite excessive...but i'm not sure.
the packet reads:For a 480 kg horse: administer 2 sachets twice daily for 2 days. This is equivalent to 12.5 mg suxibuzone/kg/day.
Follow by administering 1 sachet twice daily for 3 days (equivalent to 6.25 mg suxibuzone/kg/day).
Thereafter, administer 1 sachet daily or on alternate days, in order to achieve the desired clinical response (equivalent to 3.1 mg suxibuzone/kg/day). Thereafter, reduce the dose to the minimum dose necessary for a satisfactory clinical response
does this mean she will be needing 4 sachets for the first 2 days[she weighs 480kg]
also i have been told to give one sachet of antibiotics twice daily-does this mean 2 sachets a day or one cachet split up into two?
sorry if it seems a bit dim-vet didnt have his glasses!

She will need 4 sachets per day for the first two days.
I guess this gets the plasma level up to therapeutic level and then you will be topping up after that.

The antibiotic part means to give one whole sachet, twice a day. So two sachets per day .

So Day 1 & 2 she will need AM 2 x Danilon
1 x Antibiotic

PM 2 x Danilon
1 x Antibiotic

Days 3, 4 & 5 AM 1 x Antibiotic

PM 1 x Danilon
1 x Antibiotic

Is she on a five day course of antibiotics? If so they will be finished then and Day 6 will be when you start to play with the Danilon to find the maintenance dose.

Hopefully someone will agree with me! If so That's your answer!

What has the poor dear done to herself?

From what you have said it is my understanding that the following applies;

2 sachets in the morning, 2 in the evening (totalling 4 sachets a day) for the first 2 days. This is what they call a 'loading' dose.

Then 1 sachet in the morning, 1 sachet in the evening for 3 days.

Then 1 sachet daily OR 1 sachet every other day depending on how well your horse seems to be. Personally I'd reduce it to 1 sachet a day for a while, see how she is, and then you could try 1 every other day.

WRT the antibiotics it is my understanding that you need to give 1 sachet in the morning, 1 in the evening (ie 2 per day).

Please note all the above is based on the 480kg weight you quoted.

Hope this helps.

i guess it must only be for about 5 days then!
This course of stuff is to clear up any possible infection or source of pain before we have to go onto any possible further investigation/treatment.
Horsey not been herself fo a while, not wee-ing well sore back. Vet wants to clear up any possible infection or pain which might be causing it. If there is no improvement she will be getting a nice scan of her ovaries-poor pet hates needles so we're putting it off for as long as possible.

When my mare has been very poorly I have only ever been told to give one sachet of antibiotics a day (500KG horse). You may be correct but I would double check.

i was less worried about the anti-biotics as i had been given more specific instructions...but you may be right!
do you know what the name of the antibiotics was called?

No, I'm sorry, they are up at the yard at the moment but can let you know tomorrow. It may be that your horse needs the extra but I have never had to give two sachets a day. How many packets did they give you? My mare has been badly injured by another horse and has to have one sachet for 8 days.
Good luck with your horse, hope it's not too serious.
