Odysseus was a very good stallion. I have heard an unsubstantiated theory that mares by him can be a bit difficult. I had a horse that was out of a mare by him and it was awful. I would always be more interested in a horse's damsire than its sire - do you know the damsire of this horse you are looking at?

Odysseus was actually graded Hanoverian although he was by a TB stallion (Orbis). I have a gelding by him who WAS a promising eventer until he had serious sarcoid problems. Derek Knottenbolt cured him and he is now a hunt horse - hell of a jump and a super temperament. Kevin Bacon was a leading Australian Showjumper; represented Oz at 3 Olympic Games. First in 1964 with Ocean Foam, 1968 with Chichester, and 1976 with Chichester again. But I don't think he ever rode Odysseus.

He did jump to a high level in Denmark (I saw him win a Puissance there at 6ft 6 ins the day after he was purchased by Steven Hobbs to come to the UK) but he never competed under saddle here. Kevin Bacon rode his own stallion Poushka II before he retired it to stud at Alvescot so perhaps that is where the confusion arose.

Odysseus was graded Hannoverian, Danish Warmblood, Bavarian and BWBS so attracted a wide range of mares and got some good performers across all 3 disciplines. However, some of them could be a little tricky and did have a tendency to go up on their hindlegs in arguments with their riders, but this could well have been more a problem caused by amateur riders not being able to cope with sensitive talented horses than any real lack of rideability.
