Double Bridle - which reins?

Since I have passed my plumbing exams (both theory and practical!) I have decided to splash out and treat myself to a double bridle. I am buying the Albion super double bridle with rolled leather. I have a choice of reins and its a toss up between nubuck reins and rubber reins. I thought that the snaffle should be full rubber/nubuck and the weymouth half either rubber/nubuck.

Has anyone used nubuck reins? How did you find them?

Haven't tried the nubuck ones but I have fairly small hands and find two set of reins too much to fit properly in my hands if one of the sets is full rubber. My double bridles have 1\2 rubber (leather on the outside thin layer of rubber on the inside) on both sets of reins but the snaffle rein is wider than the curb. Hope that makes sense, I don't think I explained that very well!

I would imagine (having never passed plumbing exams so never having been qualified to use a double bridle

Good point riviera and Silmarillion! Riviera - you did explain pretty well re the rein widths! At the moment I am using my snaffle bridle with a sliphead and the snaffle rein is my normal full rubber reins, along with a half rubber set for the weymouth. I am pretty comfy with that combination. I guess more than anything I was thinking if I got full rubber for one set they would make a good spare pair of reins in general. On reflection I do think that the half rubber looks much nicer though so perhaps I will go for half rubber for both. Still very undeceided about the nubuck. It looks very dark even though the bridle is black so maybe I should just stick to what I know - i.e. thre rubber.

Silarillion - you can be a honorary plumber if you like and hence qualified to use a double bridle all you want!!!!

I use laced reins for the bridoon, and narrower, plain reins for the weymouth. that way, I can 'wedge' my thumb into a notch in the lacing, and the reins don't slip so much through my hands.
I did use half rubber for the top, but found that they kept tangling in Star's mane (of which there is rather a lot, she being a coloured native

I have tiny hands & I either use laced reins or rubber lined. Any sort of rubber rein is just too much for my hands, it's just much too bulky.

I really like plaited reins too but not sure if they are correct for a double bridle?

I have used a laced and a plain rein, I found the laced reins were too soft and supple and couldn't keep hold. I now have a half rubber pair and a plain pair. Works well for me.

What discipline are you doing? Two sets of full rubber wouldn't be attractive in the show ring.

Its for dressage so it will be used quite a lot for schooling at home and not just for shows. Have pretty much deceided on 2 half rubber sets. I am not too keen on plaited nor just plain reins and no-one seems to have experience with the nubuck. Thanks for everyone's comments
