Just spotted a photo of someone riding a horse in a double bridle with a running martingale. (Martingale attached to both curb and bradoon reins.)

I have never ridden with both, but do any of you ride with both those bits of tack? Would that mean horse was very strong, difficult to ride etc? What would that mean to you? Sensible horse to ride or difficult to ride?

I have never ridden with a double and a martingale, but I know that that is the wrong way to ride with it!!!

the bradoon reins go through the martingale - not the curb reins!

My friend rides with this tack in working hunter classes

Seen it done all ways.

Apart from the reins getting stuck in the ring perhaps, if both curb and bradoon are through, I suspect that the action is mainly on the bradoon rein anyway.

Personally, I use it on the bradoon rein, but don't take my word for it, for thirty odd years I have been calling a wide stripe a blaze so there you go!

I learn something new everyday.

Oh gosh no, martingale goes on the bradoon rein only, never the curb!

Saying that I have seen many a pic in H&H of top showing producers with the martingale on both reins, so perhaps this is acceptable practice now.

It would suggest to me that the person using the tack might not have the patience to get the horse working correctly in any bit and is taking a bit of a shortcut to be quite honest. If the horse cannot go correctly it shouldn't be in a double bridle.

Is it not a blaze any more then?

I always thought the narrow one's a strip(e) and the wide one's (over the eyes but not round the muzzle) a blaze!

ETA No, I'm wrong (here)! Good job I don't issue passports!

Anyway, back OT, I wouldn't put it on the curb rein either, whatever fashion dictates!

I was always taught, that if you had two pairs of reins the martingale rings either had to have both reins through them or just the top (snaffle) one, this goes for gags and pelhams, you should never put the bottom (curb) rein on its own through the rings.
