Double gates in wind

Wondered if I'm missing a trick.

Currently horse I share is in a (temporary) field - with others. The access to the field is through double gates which are chained together to keep closed.

Gates both swing freely ; both in or out of field. Today I couldn't work out how to keep hold of both gates as soon as let go of one it would blew wide open and get horse out past me.

Fortunately other horses weren't trying to escape field .

Gates are about 10 foot wide each

I ended up driving a thick metal earth stake into the ground by the gate that I tended not to use and tied them together to keep that gate in place. It worked well and meant I just needed to pull it out when I needed to open both gates.

Assuming you only need to go though one gate, could you put a rock in front of the other one to stop it swinging open?

We do this with our gates. Rock is heavy enough to keep the gate closed, but easily kicked out of the way when I don't need it there.

I have an old car battery for this.

If the ground is suitable for it (ie not concrete that needs drilling), a gate drop bolt would do the job, and not be any hassle to lift as and when dual gate access is needed.

That would be ideal - but not my field and horses probably only there a couple of weeks

Heavy concrete block, cinder block, bag of ready mix concrete with water added.....anything heavy to wedge the gate really.

I use a large traffic cone that i can pop either side depending on wind direction.

We have a similar problem (although it's keeping gates wide open for tractors, when they're balanced to swing closed). A 4' stick shoved at an angle through the bars, with the end stuck in the dirt on the side they're trying to swing towards will generally keep them open. We have sticks leaning up against the fence next to all our gates, in case of needing to keep them open.
