Hey, Im going to do my pony club C+ test soon. I was looking through the criteria and it said explain the use of a snaffle and a double jointed snaffle. I know what they are and what they both look like but can anyone tell me what they do and how they control the horse differently from one another. Wich bit do you prefer double jointed or single? Thank you.

they are very similar but the double jointed snaffle action softens the nut cracker action and also the pressure exerted on the tongue and roof of the mouth. i prefer a bit with a lozenge than a plate and the NS bits in particular ( i use a team up bit i think its called) ... im sure some one can explain it better than that but on the whole i use one with 2 joints.

I've heard about 'the nut cracker action' but I'm not to sure what it means. Sorry I really don't know much about the mouth and diffrent bits however I'm really intrested to learn a bit more could you explain it to me? Thank you :)

Have a look at the sustainable dressage website for a good explanation of the bits. Also try using them on your arm to feel the difference. But the big difference is that a traditional single joint can hit the roof of the mouth if a horse has a low palate. I use a NS demi anky which is an ergonomic single joint, so it avoids the problems of a traditional single joint.
