Having seen Jetset images did not want to hijack so thought I would start a new one.

Which is correct tabs facing forwards or backwards?

I always had the inside tab bit facing backward, and then the second securing tab- ie iff WW, the one's with the label on, facing forward, ie from back to front.

ETA- the opposite way to JetSet front ones- can't clearly see her back ones!

I do it with them facing forwards as have always been taught that the tesion should go across the cannon bone and not across the tendons (if that makes sense).

Graces boots are on backwards in the photos posted below. The first strap should go from front to back and then the top strap from back to front.

The boot is shaped to sit round the fetlock joint

At Bills I was taught that the dominant strap was the first one to be done up - therefore that one should go towards the back.

depends on the make Lec. technically the outer straps should face backwards as the pony club would tell you then someone decided if you did it that way the hind legs might kick th front straps open. the fact that horses do not generally 'overlap' their legs like that (think of greyhounds, they do) has nothing to do with it of course. In fact one of the horses most famous for doing that was, topically, Arkle but he moved so wide behind pat taffe and tom dreaper reckoned you could drive a wheel barrow between his hind legs!
However because of this urban legend of boots being kicked open some are now cut to go on with the straps facing forwards. Woof ones for example, i am sure there are others. so whether you have fitted them correctly depends on the sort they are in the end.

my two horses seem to be different. I always used to have them the opposite way to the way they are on jet sets back legs. and for one horse they only seem to fit that way.

For the other, if they are on that way he ends up with a big crease down the back of the boot, and I didn't like the idea of them creasing on his tendon as he flexed so I tried them the other way ie the same as jet sets and they are much better! I also figure that when jumping that it will protect more of his cannon bone from knocks etc

as i said some are cut so you have no choice about it if you want a good fit. Woof boots for example. some makes, you are supposed to do the front ones up top strap facing back and the back ones the opposite or vice versa. the shape of the boot and its strike pad should tell you which. to summarise there isnt realy a correct way anymore, the boots them selves will dictate the way you do them toget the correct fit.

if you look at the way the boots are cut then it is rather obvious?

but saying this everyone puts them on wrong the first time till you explain to them and show them how they should go on with the top strap facing forwards !

I have always done mine first forward and second back - only one pair and probably not the best example of double lock brushing boots imo!

Woof Wear ones (and most other makes) go on with the first strap towards the back. There are some exceptions as has been said, according to the fit of the boot, such as Clarendons - the elastic and velcro strap faces forwards, then the hook goes towards the back.
I was always taught that it was so you don't pull the tendons towards you if accidentally applying too much pressure (same reason I always always bandage towards the back of the leg and then away from me - not that I would apply too much pressure as I have been bandaging for years)

Clarendons I still ended up with hooks facing forwards!

My biggest bugbear is watching people who cannot put bandages on properly. They all seem to be Sjers and after one round the bandgaes have slipped round the fetlock and pastern. I hate, hate, hate it!

I always have the first strap pointing towards the back and the outer strap to secure it in place. The longer bit of the boot runs down the back of the tendons acting as a striking pad.

Years ago at college they taught us that the outer strap should always face towards the back which I disagreed with, and people wonder why they get such bad press

I am glad I am not the only person who this irritates! I was having this conversation with sarahs the other day- it is my biggest pet hate.... If you can't bandage- DON'T!!!
