Double reins and martingales

Top rein. You were right Sarah. (Who told you THAT?)

How are things, hope your Mum is getting used to the new car now.

I had always assumed (without thinking it through) that it would be the bradoon rein. However, having looked up several articles in t'internet, it appears that I am wrong, and generally it would be put into the curb rein.

"Avoid using martingales or other restraining devices with a double bridle. If the horse is established and sensitive enough to be working in a double bridle, other equipment should not be necessary. If a horse is exceptionally strong and out jumping cross-country or hunting, it is generally recommended (especially among the old school) that the martingale is put onto the curb rein (Hitchcock, 1933). If this is so, rein stops must be used, as often the martingale ring is slightly larger than the lower ring of the curb bit and can therefore catch and slide up the bit, proving extremely dangerous."
