Just wondering when using two reins on a dutch gag where you would attach the martingale to - would seem natural to put running martingale on snaffle rein but I seem to recall that on double bridle etc martingale should be on the curb rein due to the lowering action of both?
Your views would be gratefully appreciated!

The dutch gag only has a lowering action if used with a curb strap or chain. Otherwise it has a 'lifting' action. So, raising a horse's head and then trying to keep it down with a martingale seems a bit of a contradiction.
In response to your question, I'd put it on the snaffle rein.

Yes that makes sense. I do realise that it should be used with the curb strap and without such we loose the lowering action so thanks Ive done something right for once!!

Depends what you are doing. If competing, snaffle rein. On my hunter I have a martingale with big rings and I put both through the ring. I can then stop him raising his head no matter which rein I use. It works very well indeed.

Thats a good idea cptrayes will start with snaffle and if that doesnt work will try both reins.

Thanks again everyone
