Double reins on a dutch gag?

I've just read an article saying you can put double reins on a dutch gag. Is this true? I thought double reins only went on bits such as the Pelham etc :s

yep, you can, and technically it is "correct" to do so.

I used to ride my old horse in a gag with two reins - it was great, as he only needed the bottom ring for faster work, and so the rest of the time i could ride him off the snaffle rein, which was obviously much kinder on his mouth.

Yep that's the 'correct' way of using a Dutch gag.

Agree with the rest - correct thing to do. Personally I've always used either roundings on 2/3 though. But that's just cos I don't have much dexterity!

My mare came with her tack, I watched someone else ride her with the single rein on the 2nd ring of her Dutch gag, as the previous owners had used it. I was horrified, the bit with its French-link mouthpiece turned so much in her mouth, it must have been horribly uncomfortable, no wonder she leaned on it.
I now ride her most of the time in a NS Universal with 2 reins, which she responds to very well.

Absolutely, it astounds me that the majority of these horrible bits are ridden on only one rein by people who obviously have no idea how to ride in one

Yes two reins. Otherwise you are punishing the horse all the time when he hasnt done anything naughty or at the very least collecting him all the time. Not comfy for horse.

You can always ride with just the snaffle rein (top ring) and knot the other rein and have it resting on his withers. I find he knows perfectly well that ABS brakes rein is there, and therefore behaves well and I dont need to pick it up.
