I've started riding my horse in a pelham with 2 reins. I've been using my usual rubber rein on the snaffle part then any old rein I could find on the kerb part.

I'm hoping to go to a show soon with this bit combination but I don't have a clue what reins you'd usually use for double reins!!

I've had a look at a few pictures and I 'think' you'd have a plaited rein on the snaffle part and a plain rein on the curb part. Is this correct? Is there a specific style of rein I should use on each?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Traditionally you have either a plaited or laced rein on the snaffle and a narrower plain rein on the curb.

People that like to cling onto their curb rein as though it is their only thread left of life generally put a half rubber\half plain rein on there.

failing the above you can have two plain reins with the curb one narrower

Back in my day we used to have the curb rein a size smaller lengthwise (eg pony curb rein, cob snaffle rein) as it looks neater but it seems that my particular part of the West Country were alone in this thinking as no one else seems to have heard of that!

For showing it should be plain thinner leather, for anything else I prefer a continental rein in the curb as it's easier to keep where I want it i.e slightly loose for emergency use

I use a continental rein on the snaffle and a bright blue rein on the curb aka my "emergency rein". Will be going hunting in the autumn so will probably change to something more subtle on the curb rein. Although to be honest the curb rein is only there as a safety belt (ex polo pony) and I have never engaged the curb so far.

Angelito, sorry but in the show ring the snaffle rein should be plaited or laced and the curb rein should bea narrow plain rein.
This makes it easy for a ride judge to sort thier reins out quickly
