So, I've managed to do a bit more with the horses today, but still have no energy and in bed most of the time (with flu).

Anyway, I noticed a while ago that the hoof of my grey mare who had a abscess now has a "slit" along the Sulcus on the outer side of the hoof.

After a bit of investigating, I put a hoof pick in there and there was a new sole underneath.

I'm completely fasinated by this - to the horror of my Mum who's been helping me out while I've been ill.

I've never seen this before, and can't really find anything about it through google (unless I'm looking it up wrong).

Anyone have an info on this?

I will attempt to get photos tomorrow :)

I'm looking forward to the trimmer coming over on the 15th so she can answer my huge list of questions!

My boy had horrific laminitis last year, his soles were super soft and it was all very worrying, I can't remember how many months it was but my farrier kept saying hopefully there is brand new sole under there and there was, it was fascinating to me too, plus I was so relieved, it was lovely and hard amazing really!

Read about Schoko's false sole at the bottom of the page

It's normal with a bad abscess. It's called an under-run sole. The top one dies, and a new one forms underneath where the abscess was. Fascinating though, I agree :)
