Long story short: is it OK to worm with equest pramox a week after worming with equitape? Situation has arisen due to yard rules that we were not informed about.
 
I asked my vet as a horse staying on my yard came having been wormed the same hasn't had promax (which I had got in so I could do them all together) my vet said wait 2 weeks (and it had already been between 1-2 weeks since she had the original wormer) check with your vet but I think it's prob 4 weeks or so? I'm waiting with all mine to do them together
 
why not just use equest as you have already given the equitape bit, plus it isn't the time of year to treat for tapeworms anyway.
 
Something to do with small redworm Larvi stages (it's a long word I can't remember at this time of night lol) not sure if the other equest covers it? I'm sure others on here will know. When I spoke to my vet about it she still suggested they have the pramox in a couple of weeks as its the right time of year, then back to worm counts x
 
I wormed my horse with equest (not pramox) 3 weeks later we moved to a different yard and she was wormed with vectin which shifted some worms. We have now done a worm count and all is good. I would check with your vet but leave minimum of 2 weeks in between doses which mine was happy with.
 
Pramox should be in autumn and equest now shouldn't it? I'd do pramox if you haven't as covers red encysted. Esp if any donkeys on site or new horses
Don't believe worm count shows them up so don't rely on that... Bloods I seem to recall do
 
Ah sorry re googled. Equest and pramox both cover. Pramox also does tape.
So I'd personally stick to equest as you've covered tape then and pramox next year.
Pramox is a harsh wormer to be given if not necessary straight after another.
 
Thanks for the replies - I sort of don't have a choice as no one told me we would all have to use pramox this weekend and I have already wormed for tapeworm! I'm just wondering if I need to bring it up with my YO, but would prefer to avoid a confrontation :/
 
Worming for tapes in December is absolutely fine if you want to combine it with encysted reds using Pramox but it is lunacy to use Pramox after Equitape. Do they not understand worming?
 
yes that was sort of what I was getting at BR just badly worded.

it always seems to be a shame that it is the horses that end up being multiple dosed and more wormer ends up being used than necessary (given that reducing usage is a good thing!) based on yard owners thinking they know what is best/they are doing when they don't have the appropriate knowledge.
 
If they quibble, remind them that equitape has the same tapewormer active ingredient as pramox and Equest has the same encysted redwormer. So there is no excuse to be insisting you pramox instead of equest if you have already equitaped, in fact it is harmful as it could increase resistance.

Personally I blood test for tapeworm so I only have to worm them for it if they actually have tapeworms - vet does blood test when he does MOT style visit to do vaccs teeth and tapeworm blood test.

I suspect they bought enough pramox for the whole yard at a discount and are now worried it will go out of date before it gets used. But thats not a sufficient justification for excessive worming.

NB I would NOT worm a horse with two different wormers within a fortnight of the last one, nor within 2 weeks of annual vaccs (my horse became very ill after the latter scenario and took 3 years to fully recover from recurring bouts of an ME type virus). He no longer has the flu vacc (he doesnt mix) and I never use combination wormers like Pramox, his gut cant cope.
