Downing St petition re: out of control dogs.

I'm glad to see that the BHS is starting to take seriously the problem of dogs attacking horses and other animals. I have an online petition hoping to strengthen the powers of the police to seize dogs which have been seen attacking. When four of my pet sheep were killed in 3 separate attacks the police have told me they do not have the powers to seize the dogs in question until the successful outcome of a court case. I've had to move my sheep from the only home they've ever known while these dogs are free to roam. A horse in the ajoining field was found having run through a fence and is badly injured. Please sign the petition to ensure this law can be properly implemented.

Have you any idea why the Police wont take action under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991?
Is it because the dogs are not within the classification of dangerous ie fighting/pit bull types
Seizure, entry of premises and evidence
(1) A constable or an officer of a local authority authorised by it to exercise the powers conferred by this subsection may seize—
(a) any dog which appears to him to be a dog to which section 1 above applies and which is in a public place—
(i) after the time when possession or custody of it has become unlawful by virtue of that section; or
(ii) before that time, without being muzzled and kept on a lead;
(b) any dog in a public place which appears to him to be a dog to which an order under section 2 above applies and in respect of which an offence against the order has been or is being committed; and
(c) any dog in a public place (whether or not one to which that section or such an order applies) which appears to him to be dangerously out of control.
 
To be honest I don't know the reason, they are building a case against the owner of the dogs - short haired german pointers. They went to the house to try and take the dogs to get evidence and the owner refused to even let them see the dogs. All they did was take photos of them through the window!!! The local inspector is now "looking into it".

It can be quite hard where the owner has more than one very similar looking dog, how the police are able to prove which dog is causing the prob (unless all of them are!).

I would have kept them there and (unfortunately) shot the dog when it tried it again, which you are perfectly entitled to do....
 
As we don't live on site it's been difficult. I never expected, having handed them back to the owner after the first killing that they'd be back. I assumed he'd have been mortified and just relieved they were'nt shot there and then. Seemingly not as they've been back repeatedly. We are quite lucky to have had 4 witnesses when our hand reared Darcy was killed. I'd have no trouble in having them shot now, and obviously hindsight is a great thing...
