I am looking to buy an ifor Williams 401 or 403 to tow with a Nissan x-trail on a B licence.

But out I have heard a rumour you can no longer downplate a second hand trailer?

is this true? Am I going to have to buy new?

Trailers built from Oct 2012 (I think) are subject to new regulations in regards to the plated weights but Ifor Williams and others have got around this by listing various options for each and the HB403 has, if remembered, 1600 1500 1400 and 1300 listed for each one but they all come off the line at 1600

Ok, so if I buy second hand I need to buy older than 2012. If not, I have to go new and then I can select the weight I want?

And since you're here (in a sense!), what weight would I select for it to be downplated to if I were towing with a Nissan x trail (no idea of weights as we haven't bought it yet). Horse is a 15.2 of about 500kg. Second horse is same height but maybe a bit heavier - up to about 600kg (obviously only travelling one at a time!). Happen to have them on a weight bridge on Thursday so then I will know for sure.

empty weight of HB401/3 is just under 800 and horse is 500 so the minimum I would choose is 1300 as the plated weight

Need to know GVW of Xtrail to give a definitive

If new then you would need to ask the manufacturer what weight options are available
