I have been reading about these with interest, has anyone used one?

I have a welsh C who is not particularly strong but has a high head carriage and also leans sometimes. He’s currently in a mullen mouth Pelham but has been tried in most bits at some point in his life!

And a welsh B who is incredibly strong and leans a lot who is in a vulcanite straight bar Pelham and objects to any metal mouthpieces badly. He has been tried in several bits also.

So I was thinking about trying them in one. Of oourse they both have regular soundness, back, teeth and tack fitting checks and all is well except for my section C who is now slightly arthritic unfortunately… both are used for hacking mainly now that they are in their 20’s.

i am interested in getting one for our oldies too, as they aren't strong etc. Haven't actually got one yet though so can't be much help! I have asked about this before on the forum though and someone (can't remember who!) pointed me in the direction of Lodge Ropes (google it) who have other versions of this.

I have recently bought one of the equitrek ones off ebay. Its a Dr Cook replica and was only £25 although it is cheap leather and no where near as nice as a genuine Dr Cooks. It does the job fine though seeing as we only hack anyway. My mare goes incredibly well in it. She is much easier to manage and even braking is easy. I've only been using it for a couple of weeks but did a fun ride on Sunday and had no problems. My mare has never seemed particularly happy in a bitted bridle so the Dr Cooks one was a bit of an experiment (hence buying a cheapie) but it certainly works much better than a bitted bridle for the mare in question.

i am also looking into this type of bridle. dr cooks are offering a 30 day money back at the moment if not happy.

i have emailed them twice for advice and had very good replies.. very helpfull . i will be buying one when we come back from our camping hols at begining of aug.

i have one that i have made from rope which anyone can borrow and try if they would like........just pm me..will try to post a picture of it

I have been using one for several years now - for driving no less. My mare is so much better in it. Mine was made by my local saddler and a fraction the cost of a Genuine one, but far better than most offered on ebay.

Not to offend at all, but I really do not like the part-rope ones.(sorry, just my Humble opinion)

i made this one because i couldnt afford to buy one at the time....however as you can see from the state of it, it is well used...i tend to use it on horses that i think need their teeth done...i have also used it underneath a bitted bridle on strong horses as a sort of double..

i would love to have a "proper "one but cant afford it so i make do!

Good on you, we all have to make do sometimes, and if it works for you - well done

how is it for turning and does your horse "round up" and engage well in one? Do they have a tendency to raise or lower their head in evasion at all??

I think it depends on the horse. A mate of mine tried one on her arab . as far as i can make out they work by squeezing the horses head. all her horse did was buck for england when the pressure was applied.
