If you know what you are doing, you can find some very nice, realistically-priced equines advertised by reputable, knowledgeable horse people on that site.

You can also find some very over-priced, poorly put-together animals, advertised by utter numpties/complete shysters.

Just like most of the other sites, really.

A friend recently visited Beaulieu Road sales, in the New Forest and bought two weanlings, both forest bred, microchipped with passports; the colt was £16 and the filly £35. I think DD's prices reflect the real world.

That site definitely is popular with a certain "type" - hence the endless photos of hairy yearlings being driven by fat yobs

You do get the odd gem on there too though - I drove for 7 hours to pick up a wretched lice-ridden, starved, injured, fully shod and broken in at 11 months filly just because she looked so pathetic in the advert.
She is now rising 3 and absolutely stunning!

Thanks guys.... Obviously its a bit of luck (and skill) when choosing one but you can.buy a horse for 3 times the money and it turn out awful.

Not being um 'racist' but has anyone bought off there and it been.off a gypsy? If so how did you go about it? As when i went to stow fair the gupsys ignored normal people and generally only sold to men

I have but not from DD and I've regretted every purchase. One was sold to me as 4 year old gelding but turned out to be a rig who's testicles never made an appearance. They all had problems with being headshy and uncatchable.

However, if you are just looking to buy youngstock they should be ok. Probably licey and wormy but should come good with a bit of TLC.

Not all sellers on DD are gypsies but they all appear to be of "that type" if you know what I mean.

that site is also popular with those of us who are not of a certain 'type' as a lot of driving trials horses and ponies (or potential ones) are on there- my £3500 welshie was on the BDHTA (driving trials) website with a crap picture which i ignored- he was on DD with four (much nicer) pics- i spoke to the owner for about an hour on the phone, drove 3 hours and stayed four days with the owners to try him out properly in every situation (including a two day competition) and drove back up to collect him after vet passed and payment was sent. his owner was lovely and ive made a good friend in the process. i can honestly say ive never enjoyed buying a horse more!

I think to be perfectly honest, its just reflective of the current market and the result of far too many years of indiscriminate breeding- those overpriced horses on shiney websites arent moving so quickly either, and when they do its not for the money theyre advertised for. if you look at the local sale ring (where a nice hunter goes through fit and sound for under £1000) or other sites like saddlesoap, theres hundreds of horses- mainly ponies being sold for under £300. I just wish i was in the market at the moment!

I am no fan of certain types BUT after the 22 horses I looked at this year from reputable?? websites etc only two were as described and the owners were not certain types but told big porkers so not sure what type that makes them! But I know what you mean...........

The old cob I have is a FAB star on the road and it was probably due to being driven by the certain type and taking no nonsense etc. He is good to handle etc...obviously learnt manners well?!? Has been a pleasure to own.

I think its buyer beware whoever you get it from......eyes wide open! Good luck I dont like the awful pics on the site either with kids etc riding them like rodeo etc but wouldnt discount the site.

There is a monthly (Friday) horse sale at Leominster, Sarah, have a look at Brightwells auctioneers' site for details. It's one of the better sales and certainly worth a day out. Not too far at all from you really and you get the chance to see the horses up close before they go in the ring, speak to the owners and try them too if you want.

At ashford market there are horses going for £50 or not bidded at all.

Sign of the times. People cant give horses away.

If there are nice horses you like on other websites defo worth haggling at this time of year.

I have been trying to sell my 14.2hh for a while, no interest what so ever. Its not a good market at all, hasnt been for a while. And will be a while until it picks up again.

Went to Stow fair many years ago for a day out and my then OH bought a 2 year old ride and drive piebald filly. The people actually transported her home for us and after 6 months of very light driving and then some time roughed off to mature she was an absolutely cracking cob who was ridden by my then 7 year old daughter as a four year old - we eventually sold Trixie to a riding school were she not only taught people to ride but won many x/c classes. You have to know what you are looking for otherwise you will get taken advantage of. Its just like buying off anyone really only you probably won't be able to get them vetted - as always buyer beware.

Not every-one who advertises on there is a gypsy, any more than every-one who sells at auction is.
I was the 'experienced friend' for someone who bought off DD. We got a lovely 7 yr old broken to ride and drive, but green, ex-broodie NFx pony for a bargain price, who has been teaching both friends' sons to ride for the last 18 mths and they are doing very well, including getting rosettes at local shows.
The vendor was a reputable livery yard/professional driving yard/horse-transporter. The pony had been taken to settle a livery debt.

I should think that if you buy young from this site you may be in with a chance... however older horses may have to many physical and mental scars to overcome unless very experienced.

I have experience if this and yes horse was off a gypsy and after finding out how this advertiser treats his horses and what is done with them at a very young age (i actually saw with own eyes ) i can safley say NEVER again. HOWEVER i would like to say that in my opinion this in no way means all gypsy people are not good horsemen.

For those who attend the Traction Engine rally in Cheshire in the Summer the romany gypsy who is always there year after year has the most gorgeous horses and treats them like gold after all they are his currency.

I don't know about DD, but a lady on our yard who is the old fashined sort (welly bobs etc) bought a yearling from a local dealer. I think he bulk buys in ireland. The fillys sell well, the colts, well... She bought her colt for bobbins as he was unhandled and un gelded. When he turned up I thought omg its a mini gonk, unlikly to make over 13hh ... 1 year on he's gelded, well mannered, at least 14.2 and a very nice sort. A few years back the stable manager at a yard I was on bought a stunning welsh d in horsemarts under £1000 (the days when most things sod for more) and turned him into a county winner. I think if you have the nerve and the eye it is possible to get a real bargain.

It's a driving website, so you get traveler driving youngstock, some of which is fine, some of which is poor. You also get professional driving/carriage ponies/horses on there too. Because the advertising fee is cheap, you will get a lot of the horses at the cheaper end of the market.

I haven't bought off there, but I know a few of the people that own the stallions, and some of them are very nice, but some of them are not!

A coloured colt & filly expected to make 15hh both went for about £40 each at the last Leominster. Some nice, but rather overweight 2yo welsh D fillys went for around £200 as I recall.

As someone else said, you can't give these things away.

I must admit, I've fallen in love with a dark gray spotted mare on that site. I would go and look at her if I could afford a horse (I might, if she's still for sale by the time I can!)

There are some poor, scruffy little mites on there, but others don't look half bad!

I got my mare at Stow Fair - people were happy to deal with me and my mum (tho I did sometimes struggle to understand their accent  ) A lady down the road from the yard bought a little pony from DD a couple of months ago. Bit scrawny but a good sort, happy to stand and be mauled by small children :)
