Levi is normally very good to catch , today he was a little git!!!! He decided that jumping 1mtr from a stand still over a partition was a good idea to avoid being caught !!!! ( he is 12hh btw)

Them his coat was so so dense it took us nearly 4 hours to clip him !!!

Not helped by they OH drilling next years crop right next to us!!

He is now fully clipped, but what a stressful day.

What are your clipping nightmares?

I had 4 to clip under sedation today - they are sedated for a reason! Yeah, I got 2 sedated and just had to suck it up with the other 2! I am currently in a rather sore state and in a rather foul mood which isn't 100% to do with clipping but all to do with work!

Blah.

Years ago the YO clipped my mare whilst I was there and she was as good as gold to do. She then did her again the following year but I was at work. When I got to the stables after work I noticed that she had vertical lines every couple of inches. I later found out that she was the last horse to be clipped out of the 6 that were done - all fully clipped - with the same set of blades. I later heard that she had been messing around and so had been walloped a couple of times - quite different to how it had been done when I was there. I can only assume that the vertical lines were caused by the blunt blades snatching at her coat.

The following year I asked my friend to clip her who used to clip all the hunt horses. Well as soon as the clippers were turned on she jumped straight out of her stable over the door and shot off down the drive. It took sedation and a number of years before I could clip her without a problem. Once I found out how the YO treated the horses when the owner wasn't watching I moved to another yard.

My worst clipping nightmare was a racehorse at work. True to its obtuse nature it was being a prat and so the twitch was attached.

Clipping, clipping, clipping merrily away when helper dropped the twitch just as I was nibbling at a stray hair on the chest before moving to the other side.

Horse reared up and turned and came down to earth clipping my head with a nicely shod foot. Didn't really feel much but remarked to helper that I hadn't dropped the clippers!

Then I had this sensation of something running down my neck, blood, whisked off to hospital by bosses wife where 8 stitches sewed me back together again.

Horse went to the races half clipped, as boss said, you can't see both sides at once :D

Another brave soul got the job of clipping the other side, horse sedated!

I've sent one racing that looked bloody horrendous! Not even a half and half job! This bar steward reared, bit, kicked, smashed me off of walls, stood on me - you name it, it did it! It went with a hairy head, 3/4 neck, chest, elbow & surrounding 8 inches, flanks & surrounding 8-10 inches and whatever was left on it's arse that I couldn't reach whilst holding onto the head collar! Needless to say the horse didn't win best turned out, the boss said at least it had enough off to run without over heating and the owner laughed his head off, gave me £20 "to buy a bloody stiff drink with!" Lol! He is a class owner! Needless to say I get it doped up to it's eyeballs now and I still have to be careful of it's back legs the tosspot!

My horse who was on sedalin and twitched, merrily clipping away fine then BANG he rears up and full on smacks me arm with his front foot. I didn't drop the clippers but I couldn't move me arm, 4 hours in a and e and luckily it was just badly bruised. He was full sedated there after. New one is just fidgety but good as gold to clip :)

I don't do clipping myself but help my friend out, we were clipping mine the other day, had twitched him to do his ears. I was holding onto his headcollar and next thing I know we're both flying across the yard as he did something similar to a levade and launched us! Luckily no injuries!

The worst was being dragged with utterly no control across a yard by a mostly Shire mare who had been perfect for about 20 minutes and then just had enough and knew that two girls hanging onto her couldn't stop her! Just had to let go in the end!

Pony at work, about 13hh was a nightmare. Rearing and spinning around. In the end we held him up against a wall and did a very quick job. He was so hairy and was going XC a couple of days after. Clip lines were extremely dodgy!!

Sorry but these stories are making me laugh ;):o.

Mine are as good as gold to clip, which lulled me into a false sense of security with my show pony! She is so good I don't need to tie her up, can clip her face, ears, belly everything without a murmur. So last year I decided I'd do a proper full clip and whip everything off including the legs...

Now I'd never clipped her legs out before as being a PBA she doesn't have any feather, but spurred on by the fact she is such a angel I didn't think anything of it. Well I got as far as the first knee before she told me in no uncertain terms that I was NOT clipping her legs , I bled, she bled, before my little darling had to be twitched so I could finish and so she looked half decent :o!

Never again will her legs come off :D.

It's the one thing i can't do with my mare so we don't even try anymore. To do her under sedation the vet has to stay nearby and keep topping her up as she comes out of it really quickly and its the only thing she gets nasty about. We've decided this year that even though she is in work we will just have to manage her without, it's not fair to put her through it. I've tried desensitisation with little clippers etc - can rub them all over her but as soon as she feels the blades on her she starts striking out :(
We think that she's probably been shocked at somepoint for the reaction to be so extreme.

Mini clippers for legs, head and ears! 1st clip of the year and I nearly chopped my Connemara's ears off.... both of them! I felt so bad. He is now letting me clip the outside of his ears with the mini clippers after a lot of persuasion that I wasn't going to try and de-ear him again.

Clipping a very hairy pony for someone using a third party's clippers. Very dense, greasy coat and, although finally got enough off, it looked like it had been done with a knife and fork :( No opportunity to go back, reclip etc as all done with hired generator and YO would not allow horses to stay in ready for clipping...

Clipping my new lad for the first time this year and suspect he's not going to like it (he's a bit twitchy at the best of times) so the plan is to start really, really small and just do a tiny bit once a week, partly to desensitise and partly because I don't know how much he will actually need off so want to experiment. It will put my lines to the test but my plan is very small bib followed by gut and gullet, followed by low chaser, followed by proper chaser, followed by blanket and half head, if he actually needs that much off. If he's really difficult, will probably stop at gut and gullet ;)

I wouldn't mind but I already clip her with the Liverman Harmony clippers which are really glorified trimmers! It is truly not worth the hassle with her, but a good tip for Topaz who doesn't like her ears doing, will keep that in mind thanks.

oh gosh soe of these are awful! i deffinatly think clipping is one f the most dangerous jobs!

Mine is brilliant to clip, doesnt need tying up can do all the niggly bits with out so much as a peep out of her some days i can do a full face and ears, sometimes need a twitch to finish off the last bits - but i cannot do her legs any where below the knee/hock line and she is a complete nightmare throwing her weight around being a complete pig! So i only do her legs every other time and get some sedation from the vet - makes clipping an easy horse very expensive! if it wernt for the fact that she is so hairy and looks compleetly rediculous with full clip above the elbow and then a shetland on steroids below i wouldnt bother!

Forgot to mention the time I was clipping one of my horses who was very good to do until about half way up his neck towards his ears. Had my groom holding him on the twitch as I was doing the bridle line on his face when he suddenly snatched his head, she dropped the twitch and it swung round and broke my nose. Our handyman commented on 'tough horsewomen' when he saw me finishing the clip with blood running down my face. I was just pleased not to have dropped the clippers.

Did mine yesterday and he had enough sedation to lay an elephant on the floor but he still wouldn't let me near his ears, head lines.are wonky as I was rushing and he nearly ended up being left with looking like he had furry ankle boots on his front legs but fortunately he could have another top up, he was that.drunk he was leaning against the wall practically snoring.
Dentist turned up in the afternoon, had hoped he'd still be drunk enough that th dentist could get near him- no chance!

Anyone else find spooky horses are a lot more spooky after waking from sedation?

They aren't fully 100% sober and are probably still realising that there are muscles in ttheir body that aren't doing what they should.

I doped a wee git last year - never ever again! Poor ******! He was terrified of the fact that he couldn't feel or use his muscles as he should so he went mental. I had to walk away and leave him to sort himself out else he would have seriously hurt me. He is clipable without sedation but it doesnt look pretty as he is a pita - hence the one off doping session.

Bloody racehorses!

Both of mine are good to clip thankfully-my Connemara goes to sleep! However, my welsh boy would never ever let me do his legs even if I wanted to (which I don't anyway)- I have to be careful when I do the line for his legs when I give him his hunter clip so I don't get booted!

Mine are usually good but I think my clipping the old girl the other day may have altered that she was contentedly eating her haylage while I plaited her mane and groomed her have not used the clippers since last year so thought just in case thye are not working I would run them up the front no damage done if they don't work worked fine so set about doing a full clip the very first run up her shoulder and just behind her ear the clippers exploded in sparks luckily we had a circuit breaker pony broke the string and disappeared at a rate of knots to the other end of the field and refused point blank to come back so had a big bib clip done with the trimmers Was lent another set plugged them in she was a bit sus but stood like a good girl went a bit closer to let her have a look and bang that set blew a fuse right under her nose cue her disappearing again down the field at a flat out gallop. o next is a couple of sets of new blades and a lot of hours to clip her slowly back from the bib with the trimmers that's if she will still let me near her with buzzy things

Mine are angels to clip thankfully, it's me that's the problem, I did catch one of mine just behind his elbow, it was only a tiny nick but as soon as I saw the blood on my finger I passed out. horse stood like a rock and never moved!
I'm getting someone else to clip them this year....

Clipped my Arab last week.....his first clip ever.

He was an absolute star, God love him. Couldn't believe it. Was preparing for a session getting dragged around the yard.....never happened...

I clipped my Arab today he has been done loads of times and his always a good boy, he gets a bit fidgety under his belly but he never does anything nasty, was your Arab shown in hand? Many arabs that are shown or bred at a stud often get clipped when very young so most of them are used to it.

Why are people so keen to clip off legs - Legs really should be left on! The skin on the lower leg has no protection once you clip off the hair - the skin can more easily be damaged with knocks, brambles, any sharp twigs, branches you meet - plus the hair assists in keeping the horse warm.

We never took off legs or saddle area - leaving that to protect the horse from friction induced ingrowing hairs. Trim down the back of the leg on a hairy horse - either with scissors or cordless trimming clippers - but leave legs on.

We also only clipped the outside of ears if the horse was stabled. Anything living out kept them on. NEVER ever clipped inside ears, especially in winter - the cold whistling into their ears must be so uncomfortable.

clipped my mare for the second time this year, she has legs left on, a saddle patch and half face this time-last time she has no saddle patch, legs on and full face off. the clippers were leaving lines (blades probably need sharpening) so I resorted to doing the whole clip with trimmers-took 4 hrs but it is really smart-as I type my hands are just starting to go numb so I have obviously set my carpal tunnel syndrome rampaging-my mare is hogged too and I will trim legs if needed but wont take them right off-I do fully trim ears if I take the full face off though

Outside only though? Trim even the inside hair?
