draw reins thoughts on ppl who use them with no reins

this makes me really mad i have a friend who broke hers like this schools like this and also hacks all time is it me or is it tottally wrong
 
I've never seen anyone ride in just draw reins... Personally I wouldn't want to either! They are there as an aid only, not for the above purpose.

I hate draw reins, even when used with normal reins. If used on their own then I can only say that your friend is a very poor horse person who obviously does not have the skills to ride properly. Disgraceful!

She probably thinks her horse looks smart going along with its head tucked in :rolleyes:
 
That's just plain mad can't think of any reason you would do that.
I do use draw riens in certain circumstances not often but have had a lot of training and see no issue with especially if you use them under the eyes of a top trainer.
Your friend will ruin her horse it's crackers and dangerous .
 
Hate draw reins with a passion - yanks the front end in and the arse end is left trailing miles behind. When are the users going to learn - you ride a horse up from behind into the hand!! Just a 'quick fix' gadget, looks bloody awful, develops all the wrong muscles and anyone who uses them without reins is a complete t**t, IMHO
And breathe................. :D
I used to work with show jumpers in the 70's and everone wanted their horses to go like the Germans, so draw reins were the gadget of choice to achieve the effect - all the gear, no idea. :(
A friend of mine recently bought a lovely Arab gelding who has been ridden overmuch in draw reins, he has no idea how to go forward into your hand - just bounces on the spot with his head on his chest.
No sorry, I loathe most gadgets, but draw reins are definitely the worst! :(
 
I watched a beautiful dressage demo recently from a FBHS who was teaching several different levels of rider and horse combinations. They were all in simple tack, either a snaffle or double, and any school movements they performed were true, rather than exaggerated or false as so often seen in those schooled with gadgets.
 
Spent over 18 months undoing the work of badly used draw reins, really not a fan of them and not only do they create problems with the way of going its also affected his attitude.
 
I too agree with amymay. I know even a snaffle can be misused but draw reins seem to be the gadget of choice for idiots. That's not to say anyone who uses them is an idiot, some people i'm sure have a very good reason to, but just they are misused by a lot of people.
 
Draw reins were originally used on a Spanish/lunge style cavesson and used to establish LATERAL bend, nothing to do with longitudinal bend ie cranking the head down, never on the bit, and certainly never on their own!
 
She should be shot.....i only use them if i think they will help and the horse wont freak and thats still for 15 mins max in the middle of a schooling sesson and loose enough so they release when nag lowers as he likes thinking he is a giraffe and he freaks on the lunge so this helps but still i only use them once or twice evry 6 months or so:D as i heard all the horror stories about them. X

We used to have I know it all but know person on our yard who did this, passed her on lane other day and she is still doing it, but what do I know !!
 
The thinking for fools is generally 'look where that high level dressage horses head is, if I pin my horses head in I will get mine going the same, despite its hind legs being two counties behind, years of training & self carriage are uncalled for, just hold its head'

Exact same... in the process of undoing the damage where they were used to start a lovely young ID very quickly to sell on from Ireland, (apologies to any good producers)
