i was just wonderng your opinions on draw reins?
you see i once watched someone use them to pull their horse right in at the front until its nose was on its chest and couldn't brethe,

but this was after i had a go of using them and i only used them very lightly and dropped the contact as soon as the pony was tucking his nose in.
he was working from behind/moving foreward he just hadn't got the idea of tucking his nose the extra few inches.
but i DID drop the contact of them afterwards
and it did do wonders

i was just wondering if you thaught they were cruel even if used like i did?

I don't think there cruel I do think they do cause more damage than good in the wrong hands :(
I've never been a fan of the prob used them a handful of times in 18 years but bought an ex racer who was awful condition and moved onto a yard and paid for schooling sessions off the owner he is an Eventer and knows his stuff. He put my boy in them and asked me to ride my boy in them daily I hated the idea but as I said he was far more exper than me so I gave it a whirl, they helped my boy and do have there place but am still no converted to them

I like them (prepares to be shot ;)) my boy works well in them and i have been taught to use them properly.

When used correctly they are a very useful piece of kit. The problem is not many people know how to use them properly and end up with more problems than solutions.

I have only ever rode in draw reins twice and it wasnt my horse but a friends. Was a well schooled horse but had the most hardest mouth i have ever felt in all my life, i honestly do not know how she rode it in an outline without the draw reins. He worked well in them and deffo did not have his nose in his chest lol they were just to keep him on the vertical. But personally I have never used them on my own horses because i think they just pull the head in so not pushing through from behind. There a quick fix to make a horse look good initially. I do use them for lunging but they work differently when used like this so doesnt count :p

I don't mind them but they are grossly misused.

I'm afraid OP, if you were using them to get the horse to tuck his nose in, I would class you as one of the many people who use draw reins incorrectly.

I ride my friends horse in them but loosely, it just takes the fight out of everything when we havent schooled for a week. I think they are a good tool but are generally never used properlly and have become a fashion statement due to the big name show jumpers always using them
