this might sound silly, but i want to try out draw reins as i have never used them before and want to know how to use them correctly. can anyone help??? xxx
I would get an instructor or someone who has a lot of experience with them to show you how to use them as they can do a lot more harm than good in the wrong, or inexperienced hands.
Dont want to sound harsh but its probably best if you get an instructor to show you as if they are used incorrectly can really make a mess of your schooling. They are useful training aids but only if used correctly!
However if you want to go ahead and use them anyway... Hook the loop through the bottom of your girth and clip on the draw rein on one side, then pass it up through your bit, over the neck, back through the bit on the otherside and down to the loop on the girth. When you're riding you need to take up your reins as you would normally ride and then pick up the draw reins and hold them like reins but under your 2nd and 3rd fingers so they are on top of your reins (its really hard to describe!) You should have an even contact through both your normal rein and your draw reins. Dont force the outline as you may make your horse feel trapped which may then lead to bucking, rearing, napping etc. You want your horse working properly through its back.

you really shouldnt be giving out advise like that on a potentially dangerous piece of equipment to someone whos riding ability we know nothing about.

Sorry but you can go to dozens of websites and get info on how to fit and use draw reins. Its not up to you to decide who should and should not use them. Everyone who has answered this thread advised getting experieienced help - you can do no more than that.
I highly DISAGREE with Mrs. PG [with attitude]! I have been riding for 40 years and i believe that information should be passed down the generations rather then held back!!
I find people like you PG too be highly rude and obnoxious and no wonder non horse riders have a negative judgement of riders such as yourself because of your appalling attitude. How dare you speak to anyone with that upper classed snobby tone! someone needs to come back down to earth.
Have to say that although, of course, there are directions all over the net about how to use draw reins, there are also instructions all over the net on how to construct bombs
Neither should be attempted without professional guidance IMHO.

DO NOT use them if you dont know how to, they arent a toy to be 'tried out'.
If you want to use them get your trainer/instructor to watch you and instruct you on how to use them.
This is the main reason why draw reins can cause such awful accidents in the wrong hands.

Echo this - and do not think PG is being snobby - she is meerly stating a fact. Draw reins are dangerous if used in the wrong hands. I think if you can ride well enough to use them you should know how to use them!!! If you are asking how to use them - how can you use them effectively!!?! You need to be taught
