'proper' users - meaning users who dont just come online to cause trouble, hence why i didnt use the word 'new users' (which would have been defamatory on newbies) - just so we are clear on this!!

Draw reins can be very useful, but they are quite complicated to use correctly, I have seem them used incorrectly many times, some to the point of being down right dangerous. I would advise a lesson with someone who knows how to use them, as it is far easier to show than explain. You need to be careful what horse you put them on - I suggest a horse that is used to them the first few times, a novice horse plus novice rider just makes things harder for everyone. You need to be careful not to overuse them - they are not designed to 'make' a horse go in an outline, but to help build the muscles a horse needs to work correctly, short sessions are beneficial to some horses, others put up fights against them so are counter productive. Be aware it is hard work for a horse new to them, so don't over do it.

Personally I wouldnt use draw reins unless my instructor told me to for a specific reason and I would use them for that reason until the problem was resolved.

They can be counter productive in that a horse that pulls up against the reins attached to the girth will work the muscles under the neck and body rather than over the topline which is what I presume you are trying to do.

The art is in taking a hold and releasing them as soon as you get the right feel which is something that takes time to learn. You will also find a lot of people dead against them because of problems caused by incorrect usage.

Dont worry about the banter though - it was all harmless fun. A proper argument on here is something to witness!!!

So thanks to Weezy for bumping this, I couldn't find it at all! Just wanted to add that I always alternate working long and low with using the draw reins so they don't get fixed in a certain position.
