Hi All,

as title really, my cob has got dreadlocks in his mane and other than brushing (which isn't working) has anyone got any tips on getting them out?

I have bought some conditioner and will try that later but anyone recommend anything specifically for this

Thanks

:D

I use Lynn Russells Main & Tail spray.

It really helps keep knots easy to brush out for weeks.

If you have some conditioner then spray in, work through with your fingers and start gently teasing the dreads apart. Don't use a brush / main combe to start with otherwise you will end up pulling too much hair out and thin the main (which may be good if your horse has a very thick mane but not great if it has a thin one).

Once you have all the dreads out the conditioner should help keep things under control a bit but you will need to keep on top of it to stop it happening again.

My Shetland was good at giving herself dreads and the LR spray helped a lot.

My Clydie has a 2' long mane and gets dreadlocks. I find that it is easier to untangle them with your fingers than to brush them out. Just have to be patient.

I then wash it thoroughly and use heaps of conditioner. Fructis 'Sleek & Shine' range is great - I use the shampoo and the conditioner for coarse rebelleous hair.

Come the tangles out carefully while the conditioner is still in - I have a dog comb as it is less likely to break the hairs. Comb from the bottom and work your way to the top to prevent pulling out the hair.

Rinse and then comb dry.

If you apply baby oil to the mane and tail and gently comb through it is like magic, it just untangled, leaves the hair, shiny like plastic too! someone said it works well for her sweetitch horse too!

when my hairy cobs get this or windknots,i apply a liberal dose of pig oil/baby oil and work it well in, then the next day i use a wide toothed comb and work my way through the mane.
i find this method results in no hair breakage.
