Dream - Bad news and opinions sought

I'm so sorry to hear this, poor little mare, I hope she recovers asap.

I was horrified to read your vet pulled the afterbirth out; have always been told that's a definite NO NO but I stand to be corrected. I always understood that they should have cleansed by themselves within six hours of birth; if they haven't, then is time to call the vet out to administer something (can't think what it's called of course) as it is so important to their health - it's usually the only thing I actually panic over. I haven't read any replies, going to now, but whatever happens, that vet does not deserve to have qualified IMHO, I can't believe the stupidity.
My best wishes to you and Dream; I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.

oh dear, no you don't pull it out, should come out on its own. I no im abit off the track here but I was told when lambing never pull the afterbirth out as it may tear, let nature take its coarse. She has got an infection now so hope she will be ok..

Nothing more to add, that hasn't already been said. Good luck and ((((Hugs))) to you, Dream & Borat have everything crossed and sending all the get well vibes I can muster.

Oh dear.

I do hope Dream makes a full recovery. Well done for spotting it so quickly!

I have no advice im afraid but Im sending you all the positive vibes in the world and I do hope shes feeling better soon and makes a full recovery.

A very similar thing happened to me but my vet (no longer used) didn't check the mare properly and she had not cleansed, within a couple of days she was not allowing a very hungry baby to feed and kicked out at anyone that went near her, she was scanned and found to be full of pus and given hefty antibiotics which cleared the problem up however on a really bad note she did then get laminitis which she had for the rest of her life. It would be nice to know that when we call the vet they do actually know what they are doing, 90% of the time I've had no problem but a couple of times small animal vets have been the one on call and the result has not been good!
Good luck with your girl and I hope she recovers soon.

Hopefully the majority of the time most of us are dealing with trusted vets. I have my vet's mobile number - and don't hesitate to ring him direct in an emergency. I know all of the vets at my practice - and we are only ever sent an equine vet to deal with the horses.

I feel so, so sorry for Chambon and hope to god it resolves itself happily.

how awful!
i would agree the vet should not ever pull out the afterbirth!!!!!!!!!!that is really shocking.
it sounds like she could have a piece left in as he pulled it out before it was ready.you should always leave it in to come away naturally and then check if its intact.retained afterbirth even a tiny piece can cause lami.is he experienced?i would consider making a complaint.
lets hope they get her sorted out soon
my thoughts are with you and mum and baby poor little love.

Only just saw this so late reply sorry.
I haven't seen a vet pull the after birthout before, normally they give them an injection and it falls out itself, but it sounds like a small piece remained and has caused a massive infection.
All you can do is hope the anti biotics work.
Good vibes on their way, I do hope she takes a turn for the better.
