After many many years of owning horses I'm finally going to have the chance to build my dream tack room!
(Never had any sort never mind a dream one!)..... So as you can imagine I'm super excited!
What's everyone's else's idea of a dream tack room and what would you include in there?

Mouse/spider proof boxes to store rugs and numnahs
Shelves for first aid stuff so you can see it quickly
plenty of hooks for bridles/head collars/spare girths/etc.
Saddle racks that attach to the walls to save floor space
Some kind of heating so your tack doesn't go moldy
Somewhere to hang wet rugs until they are dry enough to put them away
If your yard is away from the house maybe kettle, small fridge
A good light
If you are going to store your feed in it maybe some mettle feed bins
I have always wanted enough room to have a tack cleaning area with one of the old fashioned wooden saddle holders :)

Hot and cold running water ....and a sink.
Tack cleaning hook suspended from ceiling.
Wall mounted cupboard for storing bottles, lotions and potions, scissors, studs, bandages, plaiting bands, kitchen roll, etc.
Doormat.
Plenty of sockets for kettle, heater, radio, clippers.
Chalk board or similar for feed info. and emergency numbers for farrier, vet.

Warm - anything warm!!!! Log burning stove would be best
Rat proof is easier said than done, but essential
Clean - a good boot scraper by the door.
Enough decent shelving wide and deep.
more saddle racks than saddles - you always acquire more - make sure they are positioned well too.
A good sofa is actually a great emergency first aid 'lie down if you feel woozy' aid!
Small Freezer for ice lollies (in summer!) or at least a cool pack for bumps etc.

Some nice people that will keep it all nice and tidy for you always helps - the last yard I was on there appeared to be some slobs living there!!

radiators for heating -whilst I love log burners they are too drying for a tack room, armchairs, dog beds, rat proof, sink, hot and cold running water, wall mounted saddle racks and bridle hooks, a free standing saddle rack for tack cleaning, cupboards above sink, alarmed, no dirty/in use rugs they need to be elsewhere as they make it smelly and damp-in fact no dirty boots/bandages/anything you need a wash and drying room for all that.
a hoover and heated floor so you can take your dirty boots off at the door and leave them in the heated porch

Honestly, it depends on how much space you have and what you want out of a tack room. Personally, I wouldn't want to be introducing any heat or steam because neither are good for tack . . . I'd want a decent number of saddle and bridle racks (many people have more than one saddle and bridle), space for a box to store rugs, spare numnahs, competition stuff, etc., shelves for first aid stuff, a wooden saddle horse and a bridle hook for cleaning tack. In a separate room - separated by a door - I'd want a utility-type room with washing machine/dryer, sink/draining board and kettle (with power outlet), perhaps a microwave and maybe somewhere to sit (that's a nice to have though). I'd want a separate space to dry rugs . . . with heated rug rails (well we are dreaming, right?).

Clad the walls in oak-stained and varnished T&G for true Edwardian splendour. Then all you need to add is a head lad @£3/week, groom @ 30s/week and a boy @ 10s/week :)

A couple of squishy old armchairs would be good too.

That sounds good :D

Throw in some wet, smelly spaniels and a JRT or two as well for good measure.

This plus a harness rack, four horses, 2 ride n drive equal a LOT of tack, currently stashed in our caravan to stop the mould

I saved this link for when I win the lottery. My perfect tack room.

Ooo lovely. Just showed DSW the pics as was trying to describe the wood panelling to him and he wasn't getting it. Going to show a pic to his dad in the hope will be able to reproduce it for us :biggrin3:

In my yard the tack room door was from inside the barn. So the tackroom door was not visible as the bard had big barn doors which were locked (obviously the tack room door was locked too). No windows either, so there was no obvious tack room. If I could have the dream tack room, i would have one where the fairies came out at night and cleaned all the tack (sorry) ;-)
Seriously, the only thing which is useful is a sink with running hot and cold water, brew making facilities and a heater to keep the mould at bay in the winter). I suppose a few saddle racks may be useful too ?

In my dream tack room I'd have hot and cold water, microwave (soup after mucking out) kettle, toaster, little fridge, comfy chair, a selection of good books and a massive lock on the inside so I can get out of the way for a bit of peace and quiet

I used to work on a yard that had an old fashioned tack room, huge floor to ceiling cupboards a big wooden horse for cleaning tack but it always gave me a headache after twenty mins with the smell of the leather.

I had the builder around this afternoon to look at where my tack room is going. We are putting a false wall in the back of one of the garages. It will also contain the oil boiler (already there) which will keep the atmosphere dry. My special metal cabinet will be in there too, so it is out of sight of prying eyes.

I may have missed it but no-one has mentioned something I consider essential if you are not close to the house - a toilet -yes I know a lot of people use their horses stable but imho that is one thing i look for when choosing a yard, let alone creating the perfect tack room

Mine would have a decent sink with hot and cold running water, a big cupboard for first aid equipment.
Wooden panelled walls with wooden saddle racks down one wall, bridles down another wall, a surface with big drawers underneath to store rugs, saddlecloths, boots etc. (On the same wall as bridles!)
Big wooden saddlehorse in middle of room for tack cleaning and a hanging bridle hook.
Another storage cupboard for odds and ends.
Little fridge, kettle and microwave!!

Would adore to work somewhere with all that, would be quite happy cleaning tack there ;)

Dark stained wooden walls, wooden saddle racks and wood and cast iron bridle racks. A few frames photos of the horses on the walls. A comfy dog bed for the dogs. Rug drying racks. Comfy old leather arm chair.

A shower room too would be good to get clean and warm in these wet muddy conditions.
