dressage attire

Hi, for unaffiliated dressage test do I need a stock? I have a stock collar shirt would that be enough? Also will I need to plat my horse's mane?

I NEVER do dressage without plaiting, I think it's a bit rude hehe. I wear a white tie for competition, but if you have a stock shirt I would definately wear a stock with it. you'll look a bit daft without.

Yes stock should really be worn and mane should also be plaited - you can just about get away without but ....

Yes you can get away without a stock, a shirt and tie is just as smart.
I personally would plait but I have seen a few people not plait for unaffiliated shows.

Does it HAVE to be a white stock? I know that is the 'correct' attire but at very novice level, would I be ok in a coloured stock? (Purple with small white dots - my showing colours)

I'm sure at that level they aren't going to say anything don't worry. Aslong as you look presentable

(I know it's not judged on presentation, but you dont want to be scruffy obviously!)

I've just done my first prelim and I was the only one plaited up in my class! I was going to wear a stock but it was quite a hot day (you remember the one, about 3 weeks ago?!) so the judge said no jackets required even... so we all did it in just shirts, very casual at our local riding club!!

Ah, panicking now! I have a comp Saturday and was goint to wear a tweed jacket with a pale yellow shirt, green & blue tie, blue velvet hat & buff jods (showing gear) so will this be ok for dressage? I have a stock but my black jacket is a hunting one and too hot for this time of year.

Tweed jacket will be fine, I'd personally go for beigh/cream rather than the yellow show jods though.

as long as your smart and not breaking any rules re tack etc then you'll be fine.

Thanks. I don't think I explained it well, the jods are a sort of dark cream, bit darker than the ones in my sig, as I show a traditional cob - I don't think the world is ready to see me in yellow, lol!
I'm being super careful about tack etc (snaffle&cavasson for us) as I was carrying a whip in my last test and was technically eliminated as it was a ODE run under BE rules - I would have been 6th and the winner overall if not for that - doh~! As I understand it, Under BD rules, you're allowed a whip/spurs, am I correct?

Beats me, I've not got a clue to be honest because when I have done dressage I've only ridden horses that have a bog standard bridles and snaffles on, never needed whips or spurs so I'v never actually tried to find out, just know that what my horse was wearing was acceptable...so I left it at that, bunged my blue jacket, donned some white jods and stock etc and job was a gud un.

Hopeing to do some affiliated dressage this year with buggar lugs though, so I'll have to swot up and what hot and what not!
