Are we ok to still wear black gloves? I went to a comp last weekend and wore black, but alot were wearing white? I compete unaffiliated, under BD rules. It wasn;t until a friend said are we ok in black that I really thought about it! Thanks

I got told off a couple of weeks ago at Patchetts (unaffiliated) for wearing very light brown / fawny coloured gloves even tho both my instructor (competing at national level) and saddlery told me they would be ok. The judge actually got out her car at the end of the test to tell me.

I was at Aff today, also running unaff, the judge commented twice on unaff test sheets that riders gloves were incorrect colour. If run under BD rules, then it need to be light coloured.

Its such an ambiguous rule tho... in the rule book it says "must of light colour" but then I know it was under discussion... no judge should eliminate if the rider is wearing dark gloves until it is cleared up properly with BD.

I was scoring at a unaff dressage couple of weeks ago, and judge was adamant that light colour gloves should be worn, she commented on all sheets that weren't wearing them. She was quite cross about it

We keep having trouble with judges writing ELIMINATED across people's sheets for wearing dark gloves (aff) as they're not aware the rule was changed from being compulsory to "preferred". I'd be on the safe side and wear light coloured gloves because as much as anything it stops them writing about it across your test sheet in capitals in red pen with much underlining and exclamation marks ;).

Thats sooooo rude and uncalled for... and I dont mean your post!!

From a discussion on the BD forum, it seems that most are ignoring the light glove rule until we have clear verification from BD.

I always thought you could wear any colour and it was best to stay clear of white if you have 'bad' hands as it draws attention to them....

HOWEVER

The YO's son does alot of Dressage and recently got commented on for wearing 'light' gloves and told they had to be white!! It was an unaff but run under BD rules.

Not sure if they were just picking though!

Crikey! That was taking it a bit far, most judges would just comment even when the rule stated compulsory. BD never ever gave us a firm directive so to eliminate is OTT.

i compete unaff, one place does aff too so i don't know if they were competing under BD rules but i wore black gloves both times and didn't get any comments. My hands are awful so i wear dark coloured gloves for dressage

I would just wear white or light coloured gloves anyway? Even if it is just 'preferred', in a subjective sport I would rather keep the judges happy :) After all, you can buy light gloves for a couple of pounds!

I wore black gloves BD today mainly coz could only find one light color one (other could be anywhere, back of sofa...cats bed!) and neither judge commented on it...and it was a qualifier :-)

The new rule is as follows 'gloves must be worn...white, cream or light beige are strongly preferred'!!! This is the current BD rule so dark gloves are perfectly legal.

It has never been correct for a judge to eliminate people for wearing dark gloves even when BD did briefly change the rule to state that light gloves were compulsory after 1st Dec last year. The official action from BD at the time was to just make a note on the competitors sheet that light gloves must be worn.

In the white vs cream debate - do I assume correct etiquette is to match your jods? (so, with one pair of each colour I can justify 2 new pairs of gloves?!)

I don't get why people are getting funny about this! As a rider I always wear white gloves and that way no one can complain! I wouldn't want someone watching my test thinking the whole way though that she should be wearing light gloves!
I would wear a polkadot jacket if the judges prefered it! Light coloured gloves are hardly a big ask.

I wear light coloured gloves when I go out now - only because I brought some when the rule was introduced, and so I am going to wear the bloody things till I break them now!!! :) Can't let £5 worth of cheapo gloves go to waste... Luckily, as they were cheapy ones I don't think they will last very long with my long pointy fingers! I have a tendancy of making holes in the ends of my gloves with the pointiness of my fingers! :)
