Why don't people enter unaff dressage novice classes?

I am organising a comp on the above date and have 3 classes, Walk and Trot, Prelim 10 and Novice 21.

The last one I organised didn't have a novice but we had loads of people asking for one so this time I added one in but I have only got 4 entries

. The walk and trot is practically full and the prelim is getting that way.

Entries close next week, do you think I should cancel that class or just keep going with just the 4 entries?

Keep it on - give the prelim's something to aspire to. An unaffil comp near us does a walk trot, a prelim and a pick a test where you can do a prelim or a novice which is a good way of having a novice option.

I'd run it and I'd mention entries on the day.

It might be a case of people remembering you didn't do novice last time so the competitors who want novice didn't even think to look at the show schedule.

If you leave a few slots for on the day I bet you get some people who do well in the prelim go for the chance.

Our RC has been running unaffilliated dressage for a few years now. At first we were lucky to get half a dozen in the novice. Now we are getting 20-25 in the novice and have introduced an elementary. It has been great seeing people who started off doing our beginners prelim progressing through to novice/elementary level. Good luck with your show!

Our yard ran an unaff dressage today - the walk & trot was reasonably well-subscribed, Prelim 7 and 18 were packed to bursting, there were 4 for Novice 20 (think it was 20) and 3 for PYO dressage to music. Hopefully a lot of people will filter up to Novice as they get more confident.
