At eventing you can wear a breastplate dressage just not the martingale attachment

The rider is actually a really nice, hardworking guy who was quite likely there without a groom. There is a steep chute up from the warm up to the arena.
I'm not sure all riders would know if they felt it going back a wee bit while they were trotting around the outside whether or not they could get off without penalty.
Riding for owners under pressure when you are trying to scrape together a living brings another level of complexity

I don't think anyone would knowingly do this, it obviously got worse as the test went on but the horse did tolerate it (most wouldn't) and having seen them in the flesh on other occasions this is not how it usually looks.
I'm sure Paddy is mortified and won't be doing the same without a breastplate again but lets face it there is a lot worse that goes on behind closed doors.

Whilst I am sure that the rider is mortified, the judges should definitely have stepped in to pause the test to allow him to sort out the tack fit malfunction.

Presumably the rider would have been eliminated if he’d raised his hand to pause the test to sort it out?

He also has a general less is more approach to tack and equipment and maybe didn't anticipate this as a potential problem (which I'm sure he will in future) 😬

Out of interest I’ve had a look at rulebooks for situations where something goes wrong in the dressage eg tack malfunction.

Both BE and FEI eventing rulebook don’t address this, but do defer to general pure dressage rules for BD/FEI accordingly.

BD does cover this and (paraphrasing) says that if a rider chooses to dismount during a test (note not fall!) then it seems to be discretionary on the judge as to whether they consider it a valid reason or not. It seems to insinuate that a valid reason would not incur penalty, an invalid reason would be awarded 0 for that movement. So my take on this would be I would very much hope judge would ring bell, but if they didn’t, a competitor has the right to stop/dismount and not get eliminated but risk a 0.

Interestingly I cannot find anything in the FEI rulebook for this situation which would seem to be an omission. So a competitor has no guidance on it. I haven’t seen the FEI judging equivalent so it would be interesting to see if it’s covered in that and, if so, does it mirror the BD guideline?

I couldn't find the actual reply when looking again but that was Pammy's conclusion, movement scores a zero but she might have been taking that from the BD rules - I was trying to check.

I dont understand how this even happens, especially at that level. Surely as a "pro" he knows how to tack his horse up right, surely he must have practiced in the exact tack at home first to know it might do this?
