Hi, I am looking to buy dressage dvds with a view to improving my seat and my dressage skills. Are dressage DVDS in general useful? Many people recommended Sylvia Loch's DVDS, has anybody viewed any of her DVDs? Can you please recommend whether they are worth buying, and if yes, where can I buy them from??

Many thanks

Think she has a website you can buy from direct. Also think she has ones you can listen to whilst riding, like having a lesson. I'm not sure I learn any more from DVDs than from a book, but I find them very inspiring because you can see the end result. She's a good rider and instructor and explains things well.

Sylvia is a very good writer, and the description to the aids for the various movements are very clear - but I have a problem with what she calles the "three point seat." I sit on my seatbones so I never quite know what she means.

I like the Phillipe Karl DVDs, but he approaches dressage in a slightly different way.. The end result is the same, but not the road to get their, so might be a bit too different for you.

I have a number of them, some bought from "her" stands at events, others from Amazon. I find them quite instructive and educational, but I'm not convinced that's reflected in my riding ;) They are inspirational though and very well put together. I love them :D

You can buy them on the classical riding club website, or you can get some on amazon. Yes, they are worth the money, as are the books
Sylvia also has a new book coming out next year called the balanced horse incorporating aiding the horse correctly using feel not force

I think the three point seat refers to when you're sitting up your pubic bone also has some contact with the saddle, instead of if you slump or tuck your bottom under/ push with your seat its just your seatbones. I've heard of the three point seat to mean you're sitting on your bottom as the third point, instead of the forward seat (jumping or galloping) where its just your thighs. Hope this helps.

What is the difference between the two??

Sylvia's 3 point seat refers to the 2 seat bones and the pubic bone being in contact with the saddle, sorry but if you sit like that you'll bounce and probably end up with rather bashed private parts!!
Try Heather moffett for a good clear explanation of how to sit correctly or Anja Beran.

Well SL certainly wasn't bouncing when I saw her ride but she was sitting up!

I find that different people explain the same things in slightly different ways. Because we all have had differing experiences and different ways of learning, different explanations appeal to different individuals. IMO it's best to read/watch a variety of experts and take from each whatever you can. I also like Mary Wanless.

Erm im pretty sure Sylvia Loch is more than capable of explaining to a rider how to sit, being the authour of the classical seat series and all.
Using the 3 point seat does not make a rider bounce about, and it certainly doesnt make Sylvia bounce around, she rides beautifully.
By all means read Heather Moffatt et al, but not because Sylvias books give wrong or difficult to understand information.
IMO her books are compulsary reading for someone who wants to learn to ride properly and why sitting and aiding correctly is crucial to both you and your horses performance.

Having seen both HM and SL ride, I personally would rather sit like SL, whose classical position is (imho) far preferable and more correct. SL certainly doesn't bounce, and even muppets like me who attempt to follow her descriptions of the three point seat can manage to sit properly

But then, I make little secret on here of my lack of respect for HM
