I've got a 5yr old German Warmblood who I want to start competing BD this Spring. I bought him in the UK as a 4 year old last year - however he was born & bred in Germany and has Westfalian papers.

I was just filling in his BD registration online last night when I read that as an imported 5 year old he'll automatically be given 45 points. The only way to avoid this appears to be a) to show evidence of importation - but I didn't import him myself so how can I do that? b) pay £75 for an assessment!?

Have I understood this correctly or am I being dim?

Also, if I don't register him with BD can I still compete him in Open Prelims?

Any advice very gratefully received

Don't know about BD but BSJA will except a copy of his vaccinations as proof as long as he has been vaccinated in this country as a 4 year old.

Might be worth phoning them to ask?

If you don't have import papers, find some vaccination records of his as a 4 year old to prove he was in the country.

I've just done the same thing but it was twice as complicated as the age on his import papers was wrong and the age recorded at vetting was also incorrect.

Find his vaccination papers - then send a copy to BD with a copy of his passport, that will be enough for them to see that he has been in the UK since a 4yo. That is what i did with Archie when i bought him and registered him BD.

I've just checked (I sent the papers on Thursday) and they've downgraded Gov's points to 0 - they didn't contact me or quibble it so you should be fine.
