No one seems to be able to enlighten me.

Why aren't dressage girths just like GP girths in that they don't buckle up under the saddle flap - oh hold on - I might be answering my own question!!!!

Is it because it means that your leg can have closer contact to the horse?

I'm asking because someone has offered me a dressage girth that comes up to meet the saddle flaps (it doesn't go under them). My old girth stops short and shows the usual few inches of girth strap before the flaps start. Is this gap necessary and if so why?

Any explanations most welcome.

Yes you're right, it's so as to get a closer contact as far as i'm aware. Do you have a dressage saddle? I would not say the gap is needed as long as the girth isn't pinching, but if your horse drops any weight then it will not go up any more and will be too big. If i am understanding what you're asking right?

Yes, you are understanding thanks. Yes, it is a dressage saddle.

He is only a youngster and quite slim. I'm hoping he will bulk up quite a bit as we crack on with work this year so I'm expecting to be moving down the straps all being well.

Hmm.... yes I think I will purchase it. Although there's no gap it doesn't interfere either.

Thanks for your help!

ppl have them too short anyway - they should be 1inch under your saddle flap any shorter and the buckle can catch the elbow and has been known to take a horse down
