Hi everyone, a bit of your help and advice needed. After jumping in waterford snaffle(so he wont grab it in his teeth and ****** off) and hunting in kimberwick(so i have some resemblance of control), i came back to our normal myler low port snaffle or loose ring french link snaffle for dressage. Well,what can i say! Head is up in the air and very small brakes! What bit i can use for the time being to regain control please? Dressage legal.
 
Dressage legal, strong bits are not really available, you need to find what snaffle suits your horses mouth shape and then, unfortunately, it is going to take time and lots of hard work to get him to work how you want him to, it is one of the problems with bitting up a strong horse that has not got the foundations in place you will often have more problems when you come back to a snaffle than you had before.
If he goes correctly in the kimblewick use that to do some work, then remove the curb chain while continuing to develop his schooling and then try a snaffle with a similar mouthpiece as your next step.
 
Dear be positive,i wasn't working him in kimberwick,i was only hunting sometimes. Usually im hacking in a snaffle or hackamore,for sponsored rides gag or waterford snaffle,as for jumping waterford or hackamore! For flatwork always used myler or loose ring! Just thought it is something with a bit more control,with roller in the middle,or something like that. He is happy in his myler,just a bit loopy now,spring grass and all that:)
 
There are no stronger bits that are legal for dressage as the rules only allow bits that mean that the horse works over its back and accepts a contact rather than a stronger bit making it look as if the horse is working properly if that makes sense. looks like you need to go back a couple of steps and redo the basics after the excitement of hunting and jumping
 
Strongest bit that is legal for dressage would be a thin egg but snaffle. Good luck retraining. Oh drop nose band allowed too.
 
Hate to say this - but a low port myler isn't dressage legal! Only ones with no port at all are.

A hanging snaffle wouldn't be any stronger, but some horses prefer the action. Might be worth a try.
