Hi there!

I have been doing a few dressage comps recently but they have all been on surfaces, woodchip sand and rubber etc - but now the summer is here and a lot of our local shows are doing dressage along with showing classes on grass.

So we are going to go to a few new places and have a go at these dressage classes, we have our first on saturday. I just wondered if anyone has any tips for riding tests on grass and whether peeps find it much different compared to riding tests on surfaces?

Thanks!!

you just need to make sure you have your horse between leg and rein and that he/she is 'together' - more so than on arena as there is less chance of slipping.

Also id use studs.

It normally takes all my effort to get him going really forward off my leg so once I've got some forwardness I will try and contain that with my rein - is that the kind of thing you mean PG? Sorry we're a bit new to it all!!

yup, thats sort of what i mean! Just make sure hes active, but that hes not falling onto the forehand, so you can feel his power, but he dosent feel like hes running away from you - does that make sense?

Yes that does! I'm aware we do have a forehand / leaning issue, especially towards the end of our training sessions when he's getting tired!!

At the moment we are trying to get the balance right between fowardness and being a bit upright in his outline and forwardness and leaning on me a bit in a lower outline. If its not one thing its another - aaagghh!!!

I find that I have a lot more impulsion on grass. T seems to much prefer it to surfaces, not as dead. I would recommend studs though.
