Hello everyone,

I'm after some HHO recommendations.

I'm looking to book somewhere to take my horse for a weeks intensive training. I would like to combine some lessons on my own horse and possibly using one of their schoolmasters.

Looking for a sympathetic trainer, someone with a classical background would be ideal.

I'm based in Southampton, Hampshire. So within a reasonable distance of South would be great.

Thanks in advance for your help

Im in Romsey area :)

Andrew Gould has just got a new base and is doing intensive training weeks, it is again all on your own horse though. Ive trained with Andrew for years and can highly recommend him.

Also Matt Frost and Adam Kemp have got a really good name too, but again all on your own horse.

Somewhere like Talland might be able to combine the two though? As i know they do school master lessons aswell. Or Wellington? I know Welly don't do intensive training as such but i think if you phone them up they would accomodate you and be able to offer you a package deal. They have accomodation on site aswell (i did all my training there).

Who do you train with currently out of interest?

Thanks both for your recommendations, i will be busily 'googling' away later!

Tempi - didn't realise we were so close by!
Are you still training with AG? What is he like as a trainer, I need to go to someone who understands that I have confidence issues and that I would rather take time with my young horse to get the basics right rather than rushing her.

Currently train with my friend who is a rider and is an immense help to me, and I have been attending a clinic a month. The recent ones i have attended were with Fiona Foy, Denise Hallion and Robert Pickles.

Reason I was asking for suggestions is that I think I need to ride something else to 'sharpen' me up. I've ridden my mare from 4yr old through to 5yr old and haven't sat on anything else. As she was really young i don't feel i have ridden properly for ages! I need to sort a few things out on me with something that is better schooled so that I can focus on me rather than the 'baby' stuff. Also, i think it will help me understand more of what i am trying to achieve with my own horse.
Hope that makes some kind of sense!

Hiya

Im going to portugal in November to train with Master Luis and Fillipa Valenca. Although im taking my own horse, Im going to have lessons on their school masters, maybe this could be something you would want to do too?

Fillipa is coming over late this year to hold clinics (not to sure when) in which you can take your own horse, she is amazing, she rode in Apasionata (sp) the year before last.

I would like to do something like this though with my horse, like for a week or something with a classical trainer. Im going to look into it when I come back from Portugal

Maddy - sounds really good. If this trainer does come over to the UK, please can you remember me and PM me with details.

Have an amazing time in Portugal! Very jealous!

I want to go to Germany - its on my list of things to do when I have some money. I have heard the horses are wonderful and the teaching is great and all very reasonably priced.

No personal experience but my friend came over from uae to talland this summer and did a week or so there with 2-3 lessons every day. She is a good rider so she did get to sit on some of the GP horses. She said it was fantastic and a great learning experience and especially rated charlie hutton as a trainer.

I haven't ridden with luis valenca but I have with other trainers there and I have seen him train. I think it can be a good experience in terms of riding some of the more advanced movements like piaffe and learning aids. But I would say the teaching tends to be quite formulaic and doesn't focus much on feel or improving the way the horse goes. So it depends a bit what you are after.

James Burtwell - he is in Hampshire, fantastic trainer, really patient and not the type to go head long into an arguement with a horse, instead give you lots of little really useful exercises and techniques which means that you go home with a clear idea of things to work on. PM me if you want his number :-)

I would suggest Amanda Brewer, she is based near Lambourn and has trained for a few years with Conrad Schumacher so is very hot on the basics etc but also excellent at giving you confidence and self belief. PM me if you would like her contact details.

+1000000 for Talland. I trained there for my BHSII, back in the days when Adam was chief instructor. Went there a scruffy event groom with a very slapdash approach to riding on the flat, and came out all dressage-y. I rode some fabulous horses while I was there. Welton Louis, Talland Blazeaway, Crown Extravagant, and a couple of others who weren't "names", but were true dressage schoolmasters. The training from Adam, Pammy and Molly Sivewright was fantastic, and I loved every minute of it.
Long time ago, but I still look back on it as the period of my life where I learnt the most.

Dovecote stables in Worcestershire is brilliant for schoolmaster lessons - people on here recommended it to me and I went for 3 intensive days of lessons for my bday and loved it. Brilliant variety of schoolmasters and Sam was a fabulous instructor! As soon as I have the money I'd love to go back there again!!!
