what is meant by giving and retaking the reins in canter? How much rein should I give and for how long?

A bit of a silly question really but me and my pony are doing our first Novice test in just over a week and I don't want to get confused!

Give and retake the reins should be one fluid movement. Make sure you are carrying your hands and push them forwards up the horse's neck so you show a loop in the reins then bring them back to their normal position. The horse should still remain in an outline - showing self carriage.

I usually count to four, keep it a fluid movement with a half halt before and after. Works for me.
