Went to my first unaffilated dressage competition yesterday with my lad. Before ready on, I have to inform you that he hasn't been for a lesson or schooling for over a month and his last comp was mid december. Had a serious worry whilst warming up, when he started acting like skippy the bush kangaroo when the horse in the next door field started running up and down the fenceline which prompted my boy to thinking that it was unfair and wanting to join it!
First test was Prem 7 and he seemed to be fairly relaxed and didn't spook at the white boards. He ride an accurate test and got 58%.
Then decided to do Novice 20 and went straight in after one other test so didn't go back into the warm up arena as it was like a irish bog. He was co-operative but I messed up on my left canter movement. On 20m circle, when reasking for canter, from canter/trot/canter, he struck off on the wrong lead and I didn't realise until I had started going across the diagonal. (stupid mummy). It was my fault that lost value marks.
Reading my comment sheets, it keeps saying need to keep a consistent contact. I am aware that horse does at times toss his head up but I am really disappointed that we didn't do better. At the end of last year, we were getting between 61 -64% for tests.
He has had every checked recently (back, saddle, teeth etc)
Can you offer any advice as I am abit deflated? I am trying to book a lesson for this week as I have entered any competition in a couple of weeks.
For those who have got this far - have a cream egg, its nearly easter!
